What it tastes like
Soft, slightly creamy, very full-bodied for a vodka. The French winter wheat shows through as a faint sweetness on the front palate. Continuous distillation, then filtered, then proofed with Cognac-region spring water.
Drinks beautifully neat from the freezer with caviar or smoked salmon. Drinks even better in a Vodka Martini. Wasted in mixers because the soft-creamy character is what you pay for.

Sidney Frank invented the category
Grey Goose was created by Sidney Frank in 1997 with the explicit intention of making the world’s most expensive premium vodka. Up until then vodka was largely a price-led category; Frank invented premium. The Cognac-region production, French wheat, blue glass bottle, and Cognac-style branding were all marketing.
Bacardi bought Grey Goose from Frank in 2004 for about $2.2 billion. The product itself is genuinely high quality, but a lot of the price is paying for the brand’s status, which is fair enough.
Best cocktails to make with Grey Goose
Grey Goose is for showcase cocktails and sipping. Wasted in heavy mixers.
How it stacks up
Grey Goose vs the other premium vodkas.
| Vodka | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Grey Goose | French wheat, soft, full-bodied | Vodka Martini, neat sipping, showcase cocktails |
| Belvedere | Polish rye, slightly drier, refined | Vodka Martini, sipping |
| Ketel One | Wheat, mid-tier, cleaner | Premium daily driver |
| Reyka | Icelandic, glacier-water, smooth | Vodka Martini, sipping |
| Tito's | Corn-based, mid-tier | Mixed drinks, gluten-free |
Substitutions and swaps
Grey Goose is the premium pour. Use accordingly.
Grey Goose is the canonical safe choice. Belvedere is the sophisticated alternative.
Grey Goose is overkill in mixed cocktails. Use Tito’s or Absolut for daily mixers.
Grey Goose is canonical. Pre-chill the bottle in the freezer for at least four hours.
Grey Goose Le Citron makes a meaningfully better Cosmo than Absolut Citron. Worth it for special occasions.
Grey Goose works but Belvedere Heritage 176 or Reyka give more depth.
You are mixing it with anything sweet (Vodka Cranberry, Lemon Drop). The premium softness gets buried under sugar.
You are making cocktails for a party. Grey Goose costs twice what mid-tier vodka does, and your guests cannot tell the difference in a Bloody Mary.
You are a value shopper. Grey Goose is genuinely good but you pay for the brand.

Grey Goose is widely available in any premium bottle shop. The standard, La Poire (pear), Le Citron (lemon), and L’Orange (orange) expressions are all easy to find.
Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.
What is Grey Goose vodka?
Grey Goose is a French premium vodka distilled in the Cognac region from French winter wheat. Bottled at 40% ABV. Owned by Bacardi Limited (since 2004). Founded 1997 by Sidney Frank.
Is Grey Goose worth the price?
For sipping or hero Vodka Martinis, yes. The soft, creamy character is genuinely different from mid-tier vodkas. For cocktails with sweet or dominant mixers (Cosmopolitan, Bloody Mary), no, the difference disappears under the other ingredients.
Grey Goose vs Belvedere?
Both premium European vodkas at similar prices. Grey Goose is wheat-based, softer and creamier. Belvedere is rye-based, drier and more refined. Pick by which character you prefer; both are excellent for sipping or showcase Martinis.
What does Grey Goose taste like?
Soft, slightly creamy, full-bodied with a faint sweetness from the wheat. More texture than most vodkas. Drinks well neat from the freezer.
Is Grey Goose actually French?
Yes. Distilled in Picardy (north France), bottled in the Cognac region (south-west France), made from 100% French winter wheat. The Cognac-region detail is part of the marketing but the production is genuinely French.
Is Grey Goose gluten-free?
Distillation removes gluten from the wheat. Grey Goose is functionally gluten-free though the company does not market it that way. Celiac drinkers should pick corn or potato vodkas as a safer bet.
What’s the best Grey Goose flavour?
Le Citron (lemon) is the most useful for cocktails, especially Cosmopolitans. La Poire (pear) is excellent in champagne cocktails. L’Orange is the everyday flavoured pick. The Vanilla is more dessert-focused.
