What it tastes like

Crisp, slightly sweet, very clean with a faint citrus brightness on the back palate. The pot-still distillation gives it more character than column-distilled vodkas. Less rich than Grey Goose, less neutral than Smirnoff. The middle ground.

Drinks beautifully over ice with a lemon twist or in a Vodka Martini. Quality holds up in mixed drinks too, which is rare at this price band.

11 generations of Nolets

The Nolet family has distilled in Schiedam (Netherlands) since 1691. They make Genever, Ketel One vodka, and various other spirits. Ketel One vodka launched in 1979, named after the Distilleerketel #1 (Pot Still #1) which is still in use.

The Nolet family still owns half the business. Diageo bought a 50% stake in 2008 for around $900 million. The vodka is still distilled in Schiedam in the original copper pots.

Recipe says vodka?

Ketel One is a quiet upgrade. Costs more than Smirnoff or Absolut but less than Grey Goose.

Recipe says citron vodka?

Ketel One Citroen is excellent. Made from real fresh citrus, not flavouring. Sub for Absolut Citron at 1:1.

Ketel One is borderline. Drinks like premium but is priced below Grey Goose. Often the right call for showcase cocktails.

Need a Vodka Martini upgrade?

Ketel One delivers. Pre-chill the bottle in the freezer.

Want a Bloody Mary that’s not a waste of premium vodka?

Ketel One is the sweet spot. Premium enough to taste, cheap enough to pour generously.

Skip if

You are stocking a party. Ketel One is too expensive for big-batch use. Smirnoff or Absolut are smarter buys.

You want the most premium Vodka Martini money can buy. Belvedere Heritage 176 or Grey Goose are the upgrades.

You are gluten-sensitive. Ketel One is wheat-based. Use Tito’s or Chopin instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is Ketel One vodka?

Ketel One is a Dutch premium vodka made by the Nolet family at the Nolet Distillery in Schiedam, Netherlands. Wheat-based, pot-distilled (in a copper pot called Distilleerketel #1, hence the name), bottled at 40% ABV. Owned 50/50 by the Nolet family and Diageo since 2008.

Is Ketel One good vodka?

Yes. It is one of the best mid-premium vodkas available, with quality that punches above its price. Bartenders pour it as a default premium option because it works in everything from Martinis to mixers.

Ketel One vs Grey Goose?

Different price tiers. Ketel One is mid-premium (around $30-35); Grey Goose is premium (around $40-50). Ketel One is crisper and slightly more savoury; Grey Goose is softer and creamier. For Vodka Martini, both excellent. For value, Ketel One.

What does Ketel One taste like?

Crisp, slightly sweet, with a faint citrus brightness. The pot-still distillation adds character that column-distilled vodkas lack. More refined than Smirnoff, less rich than Grey Goose.

What is Ketel One Citroen?

The flavoured Ketel One expression made with real fresh citrus (lemons, mandarin orange, lime), not artificial flavouring. Excellent in Cosmopolitans, Lemon Drops, and citrus-vodka cocktails. Genuine quality upgrade over Absolut Citron.

Is Ketel One gluten-free?

Distillation removes gluten from wheat. Ketel One is functionally gluten-free though not explicitly marketed as such. Celiac drinkers should choose corn or potato vodkas to be safe.

What’s the Ketel One Vodkas Botanical range?

Botanical-infused vodkas at 30% ABV: Cucumber & Mint, Grapefruit & Rose, Peach & Orange Blossom. No added sugar. Designed as low-calorie cocktail bases. Drinks well as a vodka soda when you want some flavour.
