Plymouth Gin

Earthier, softer, rounder. The gin you sip neat. Plymouth is its own legal style (only Plymouth-made gin can use the name) and the Royal Navy’s choice for over 200 years. Quietly the best gin you can drink without mixing.

What it tastes like

Less juniper than London Dry, more roots. Coriander, cardamom, angelica, orris. Sweeter and earthier than Tanqueray, drier than Old Tom. Plymouth feels rounder in the mouth than any other major gin.

Drinks beautifully neat over one big ice cube. Most gins don’t reward sipping; Plymouth does.

How to drink it

Aviation, Bramble, Pegu Club, anything classic that benefits from a softer gin. Also a brilliant Martini, especially split 50/50 with dry vermouth.

Plymouth and tonic is excellent but underrated; the gin’s softness lets the tonic’s quinine show through more than London Dry does.

It’s a protected designation

Plymouth Gin can only legally be made at the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, England. It is one of three gin styles with EU geographical protection (alongside Vilnius Gin and MahΓ³n Gin). The protection is real: no other distillery can call its gin Plymouth.

The Black Friars Distillery has been making Plymouth Gin since 1793. The Mayflower pilgrims supposedly spent their last night in England in the building. The Royal Navy bought it by the cask for 200 years.

The Navy connection

The Royal Navy issued Plymouth Gin to officers from the early 1800s. The Navy Strength expression (57% ABV) was created so that gin spilled on gunpowder wouldn’t stop it igniting. Real history, still on the bottle today.

Best cocktails to make with Plymouth Gin

Plymouth is for vintage gin cocktails and sipping. The classics it suits all share a need for softness rather than juniper muscle.

Substitutions and swaps

Plymouth swaps softness in. Use it when the cocktail wants gentle.

Recipe says Tanqueray?

Plymouth softens the drink. Works fine but tastes meaningfully less juniper-led.

Recipe says Old Tom?

Plymouth is closer to Old Tom than any other major gin. Add 2-3ml of simple syrup if you want full Old Tom sweetness.

Recipe says London Dry?

Plymouth is technically not London Dry (different protected style) but works in most London Dry recipes. Drink will be softer.

Recipe says Aviation?

Plymouth is the canonical pour for an Aviation. Don’t substitute.

Want a Navy Strength version?

Plymouth Navy Strength (57% ABV) is the louder expression. Same DNA, more punch.

Skip if

You want big juniper. Plymouth is the wrong gin for that. Buy Tanqueray or Beefeater.

You’re making a Negroni. Plymouth’s softness gets buried under Campari. Beefeater wins this one.

You’re on a budget. Plymouth costs more than Bombay or Tanqueray. Worth it for sipping; less worth it for everyday cocktails.

Where to buy Plymouth Gin

Where to buy

Plymouth Gin is widely available at better bottle shops and most major supermarkets. Less common at convenience-store-level retailers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is Plymouth gin?

Plymouth Gin is a protected-designation gin made only at the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, England. It’s softer and earthier than London Dry, with less juniper and more root botanicals. Founded 1793.

Is Plymouth gin London Dry?

No. Plymouth is its own legal style with EU geographical protection. Only gin made at Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth can use the name. Functionally it sits between London Dry and Old Tom in style.

Is Plymouth gin good for Martinis?

Yes, exceptionally. The softness pairs beautifully with dry vermouth, and Plymouth was the canonical Martini gin in the early 20th century. A 50/50 Plymouth-vermouth Martini with a lemon twist is a serious drink.

What does Plymouth gin taste like?

Less juniper, more coriander and cardamom, earthy from angelica and orris root. Sweeter and rounder than Tanqueray. Drinks well neat, which is uncommon for gin.

What’s Plymouth Navy Strength?

The 57% ABV expression. Originally made for the Royal Navy because gin at 57% ABV spilled on gunpowder wouldn’t prevent ignition. Today it’s just a louder, more concentrated Plymouth, brilliant in cocktails that need extra punch.

Plymouth vs Tanqueray?

Different drinks. Tanqueray is loud London Dry, perfect for cocktails. Plymouth is softer, perfect for sipping and vintage cocktails. Most home bars eventually want both.

Why is Plymouth associated with the Navy?

The Royal Navy issued Plymouth Gin to officers from the early 1800s through the 20th century, buying it by the cask. The brand still leans into that history. Authentic, not marketing.

Is Plymouth gin vegan?

Yes. Plymouth is plant-based and confirmed vegan-friendly.
