What it tastes like

Toasted oak, caramel, banana, dark fruit, gentle spice, a long finish. The pot-still component brings the body; the column-still component keeps it clean. The bourbon-barrel ageing pulls everything together.

Drinks at 43% with real richness. Not heavy, just full.

How to drink it

Sip neat or with a single rock. The right format. Also brilliant in a Daiquiri if you want a rich, complex version, or a Rum Old Fashioned.

Skip it in heavily sweetened cocktails: the Mount Gay disappears under syrup.

The world’s oldest rum distillery

Mount Gay was founded in 1703 in Saint Lucy, Barbados, making it the oldest continuously operating rum distillery in the world. The XO was launched in 2003 to anchor the premium end of the range.

Remy Cointreau bought the brand in 1989. Production has stayed in Barbados, with limestone-filtered water and a blend of pot and column distillation that has barely changed in centuries.

Why XO matters

XO sits at the crossroads where rum becomes a sipping spirit. The 8-to-15-year age statement is real, the cask types (ex-bourbon, with some XO bourbon and cognac casks) are legitimate, the price stays reasonable. Most rums at this complexity level cost twice as much.

Best cocktails to make with Mount Gay XO

Mount Gay XO is a sipping rum first. Use it in Old Fashioneds and stirred drinks where age matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is Mount Gay XO rum?

Mount Gay XO is a blended Barbados rum from Mount Gay distillery in Saint Lucy. It blends pot- and column-still rums aged 8 to 15 years in ex-bourbon barrels (with some XO bourbon and cognac casks) and bottles at 43% ABV. Owned by Remy Cointreau.

Is Mount Gay XO good rum?

Yes, very good. It is one of the most respected mainstream sipping rums and a benchmark for Barbados rum. Lovely complexity at a fair price for the age statement.

What does Mount Gay XO taste like?

Toasted oak, caramel, banana, dark fruit, baking spice, long finish. Drier and oakier than Diplomatico, less funky than Appleton, fuller than Havana Club 7.

Mount Gay XO vs Appleton Signature?

Mount Gay is Bajan, oak-led, balanced. Appleton is Jamaican, fruitier, slightly funkier. Mount Gay is the sipping default; Appleton is the cocktail upgrade.

Why is Mount Gay XO expensive?

The age statement (8-15 years) and the blending of pot and column stills costs real money. For the complexity, the pricing is actually fair: many comparable aged rums sit at twice the price.

Can you mix Mount Gay XO?

Yes, in stirred and aged-rum-led drinks. Rum Old Fashioned, Manhattan-style cocktails, Daiquiri if you want a rich version. Don’t waste it on cola.

Is Mount Gay XO gluten-free?

Yes. Sugarcane-based, no grain.

What is the best way to drink Mount Gay XO?

Neat in a small glass, or with one large ice cube. If you mix it, a Rum Old Fashioned: 60ml Mount Gay XO, 5ml demerara syrup, two dashes Angostura, orange peel.
