What it tastes like

Sherry, dark chocolate, dried fig, vanilla, oak, and noticeable sweetness. The blend mixes column and pot still rums aged in ex-bourbon and ex-Spanish whiskey casks. Smooth, viscous, dessert-like.

Drinks like a digestif. Not aggressive, not boozy, almost too easy.

How to drink it

Sip neat or with a single rock. Built for that. Also brilliant in a Rum Manhattan or a soft Old Fashioned where the sweetness can lead.

Skip it in citrus cocktails: the sugar fights the lime. Skip it in cola: there’s already enough sugar.

The Venezuelan rum that changed the category

Diplomatico is made by Destilerias Unidas in Lara, Venezuela. Founded in 1959, the brand exploded internationally in the 2010s as the Reserva Exclusiva won every premium-rum award going. Sales rocketed.

The added sugar (around 35-45 grams per litre, depending on testing year) became a controversy. Some bartenders refuse to stock it on principle; many drinkers couldn’t care less. Both positions are reasonable.

Sugar in rum

Adding sugar to rum after distillation is legal across most of the world but is considered cheating by some traditionalists. Diplomatico, El Dorado, Zacapa, and many others sweeten their premium bottlings to enhance smoothness. If you want unsweetened aged rum, Mount Gay XO and Havana Club 7 are the alternatives.

Best cocktails to make with Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is a sipping rum first. Use it in soft stirred drinks where sweetness is welcome.
