Absolut Vodka bottle on a dark bar.

Absolut Vodka

Absolut Vodka

Swedish wheat vodka in the iconic apothecary bottle. Slightly softer than Smirnoff, smoother in mixed drinks, with a flavoured range that bartenders genuinely use (Absolut Citron is the canonical Cosmo vodka). The bottle that made vodka cool in the 1980s.

What it tastes like

Soft, slightly sweet on the back palate, very clean. The wheat base makes Absolut taste fuller-bodied than grain vodkas like Smirnoff. Continuous distillation produces a remarkably consistent spirit batch to batch.

Drinks well over ice. Not a sipping vodka but better than Smirnoff at it.

Why the bottle is iconic

Absolut was launched in 1979 with the now-famous apothecary bottle, designed to look distinctive on bars and shelves. The Andy Warhol commission in 1985 turned the bottle into pop art. Hundreds of artist-edition bottles followed. The bottle is half the brand.

The flavoured range (Citron, Mandrin, Pears, Vanilia) became huge in the 2000s, especially Absolut Citron, which is the canonical citrus vodka in a Cosmopolitan. Pernod Ricard now owns the brand.

Best cocktails to make with Absolut Vodka

Absolut works in everything. The flavoured range is genuinely useful, especially Absolut Citron.

Substitutions and swaps

Absolut swaps for any neutral or wheat vodka.

Recipe says citron vodka?

Absolut Citron is the canonical pour. Stoli Citros and Smirnoff Citrus are the alternatives.

Recipe says premium vodka?

Absolut Elyx is the upgrade. Same brand, single-estate copper-pot version.

Recipe says vodka, no brand?

Absolut is a fine default. Slightly softer than Smirnoff, slightly cheaper than Grey Goose.

No fresh fruit for a flavoured cocktail?

The Absolut flavoured range (Mandrin, Pears, Raspberri) often does the job. Citron for citrus, Vanilia for dessert drinks.

Want a Vodka Martini upgrade?

Absolut Elyx outperforms standard Absolut in this drink.

You are gluten-sensitive. Absolut is wheat-based. Choose Tito’s (corn) or Chopin (potato) instead.

You want the cheapest mixing vodka. Smirnoff is meaningfully cheaper at the same general quality.

You want a Russian or Polish vodka for cultural reasons. Absolut is unmistakably Swedish.

Absolut is in every bottle shop and supermarket worth its salt. The flavoured range is at most premium-leaning retailers; Elyx is at specialty stores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is Absolut vodka?

Absolut is a Swedish wheat-based vodka made in Ahus, southern Sweden, owned by Pernod Ricard. Bottled at 40% ABV. Distilled continuously (rather than in batches) for consistency. Famous for the apothecary bottle and the Andy Warhol art campaign.

Is Absolut good vodka?

Yes for cocktails. Slightly softer and more refined than Smirnoff, slightly cheaper and less premium than Grey Goose. The flavoured range (especially Citron) is genuinely useful and bartenders pour it.

Absolut vs Smirnoff?

Absolut is wheat-based and slightly softer; Smirnoff is grain-based and slightly drier. Absolut is roughly 25% more expensive. Most drinkers cannot reliably tell them apart in cocktails; pick by price or label.

What does Absolut taste like?

Soft, slightly sweet on the finish, very clean. Wheat base gives it a fuller body than grain vodkas. Drinks easily neat over ice but is built for cocktails.

What is Absolut Elyx?

The premium expression. Single-estate (one farm in Sweden), copper-pot distilled (not column-distilled like standard Absolut). Smoother, more concentrated, about double the price. Worth it for showcase Martinis.

Is Absolut gluten-free?

Distillation removes gluten from the wheat. Absolut is functionally gluten-free though the company does not explicitly market it as such. People with serious sensitivities should choose corn (Tito’s) or potato (Chopin) vodka.

Why is Absolut famous for art bottles?

The 1985 Andy Warhol painting Absolut Vodka kicked off a now-decades-long campaign of artist-designed editions. Keith Haring, Ed Ruscha, and hundreds of others have done bottles. They are collectable. Absolut credit the campaign with turning a generic vodka into a global brand.
