Beefeater London Dry gin bottle on a dark bar.

Beefeater

Beefeater

Old-school London Dry. Aggressive juniper, lots of citrus peel, no apologies. The gin every craft cocktail bar respects but most home drinkers underuse. Cheap, loud, brilliant in the right cocktail.

What it tastes like

Loud juniper, plenty of orange and lemon peel, a slight bitterness from angelica and almond. Beefeater is the gin that pushes back. It is not subtle and it is not trying to be.

The standard 40% bottle is a workhorse. The 47% Beefeater 24 (with Japanese sencha and Chinese green tea) is a more refined sipping gin and a serious upgrade for Martinis.

How to drink it

Negroni. Beefeater’s juniper and citrus muscle through Campari and vermouth like nothing else does. If you only learn to make one cocktail with Beefeater, make this one.

Also strong in Last Word, Tom Collins, and any old-school gin cocktail. Avoid in delicate floral drinks: Beefeater is too loud.

Why bartenders love it

Beefeater is genuinely made in central London (one of the few gins that still is) using a recipe largely unchanged since 1860. Cocktail bartenders treat it as the canonical Negroni gin because it has the volume to push through Campari without disappearing.

It is also one of the cheapest London Dry gins on the shelf. A bottle that holds its own against Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire for $5-10 less. Hard to argue with.

Beefeater 24 is a different drink

The 47% Beefeater 24 expression adds Japanese sencha and Chinese green tea to the botanical list. Smoother, more aromatic, a serious sipping gin. About twice the price of standard Beefeater. Worth it for showcase Martinis or for sipping neat over one big ice cube.

Best cocktails to make with Beefeater

Beefeater is built for stirred, bitter, or citrus-heavy cocktails. It’s the gin that wins when the drink is busy.

Substitutions and swaps

Beefeater swaps in for most London Dry recipes. It just makes them louder.

Recipe says Tanqueray?

Beefeater works at 1:1. The drink will be slightly more citrus-heavy but otherwise identical.

Recipe says Bombay Sapphire?

Beefeater works at 1:1. Drink will be louder. Tone down any other strong flavour by a hair if you want balance.

Recipe says Hendrick’s?

Don’t. Beefeater is the wrong gin for cucumber-rose cocktails. Pivot or buy Hendrick’s.

Recipe says London Dry, no brand?

Beefeater is the dependable choice for cocktails. Bombay or Tanqueray for slightly softer drinks.

Want a smoother Martini?

Use Beefeater 24 instead of standard Beefeater. Same backbone, more elegant.

Skip if

You’re new to gin. Beefeater will hit you over the head with juniper. Start with Bombay or Hendrick’s.

You’re making a delicate floral cocktail. Beefeater bulldozes anything subtle.

You’re sipping neat. Standard Beefeater is too rough. Buy Beefeater 24, or buy Plymouth.

Where to buy Beefeater

Where to buy

Beefeater is one of the cheapest top-shelf London Dry gins. Any bottle shop or supermarket has it. The Beefeater 24 expression is harder to find and worth the extra effort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is Beefeater gin?

Beefeater is a London Dry gin made in central London (one of the few that still is). Founded 1820, recipe largely unchanged since the 1860s, owned by Pernod Ricard. Standard bottle is 40% ABV; the premium Beefeater 24 expression is 47% ABV with added green tea botanicals.

Is Beefeater a good gin?

Yes for cocktails, especially Negronis. It’s a top-tier London Dry at a budget price. Less suitable for sipping neat unless you go for the 47% Beefeater 24 expression.

What does Beefeater taste like?

Big juniper, lots of orange and lemon peel, a slight bitterness. Compared to Tanqueray it’s more citrus-heavy. Compared to Bombay Sapphire it’s louder. Compared to Hendrick’s it’s a completely different gin.

Beefeater vs Tanqueray?

Both are top-tier London Dry workhorses. Tanqueray is slightly more refined, slightly more juniper-led. Beefeater has more citrus and more bite. For a Negroni, Beefeater wins. For a Martini, Tanqueray edges it.

What’s Beefeater 24?

The 47% premium expression with Japanese sencha and Chinese green tea added to the botanical list. Smoother, more aromatic, designed for sipping or showcase Martinis. About twice the price of standard Beefeater.

Why is Beefeater cheap?

Scale. Beefeater is one of the largest gin brands in the world by volume, owned by Pernod Ricard, distilled efficiently in London. Lower price doesn’t mean lower quality, it means lower margin per bottle.

Is Beefeater the best gin for a Negroni?

Yes, in our opinion. The juniper and citrus push through Campari and sweet vermouth better than softer gins like Bombay Sapphire or Hendrick’s. Tanqueray is a close second.

Is Beefeater vegan?

Yes. Beefeater is plant-based and confirmed vegan-friendly.
