Where it came from

Jello shots came out of US college campuses in the 1980s and 1990s. The recipe is essentially a Jello dessert with vodka substituted for half the cold water. Once set, the shot holds its shape and can be eaten or sucked out of a small cup.

Meagan’s version uses two flavours of Jello layered for visual effect, and raspberry vodka to amplify the fruit.

What it tastes like

Sweet raspberry and strawberry, the vodka almost completely hidden by the jelly. The cold and the gel texture cover the alcohol entirely. They feel like a dessert, drink like a shot.

Quantity is the watch-out. People eat them like candy and forget there is vodka in there.

How strong are they?
Each shot is around 12 percent ABV at standard 1:1 vodka to water replacement.
How long do they take to set?
At least four hours in the fridge. Overnight is safer.
Can I freeze them?
No. The water content makes them rock solid and the texture goes off.
How long do they keep?
Up to a week refrigerated. The texture starts breaking down after that.
Garnish?
Whipped cream on top is the dorm room standard. A fresh raspberry is a step up.
