Where it came from

Named after the band, in spirit if not in license. The Grateful Dead is a Long Island variant from the 1990s where Chambord replaces the cola and gives the drink a deep red float that streaks through the glass like sunset.

It is the Adios Motherfucker family member with raspberry instead of blue curacao.

What it tastes like

Sweet raspberry on the float, citrus body in the middle, alcohol warmth on the back. Five spirits stack but stay quiet under the sour mix and the Chambord.

Heavy ice keeps it moving. Without dilution it goes spirit-bomb fast.

Lejay Cassis or Briottet Creme de Mure.

Lemon juice and sugar syrup, equal parts.

Want it weaker?

Half the spirits and double the ice.

Want a cola top?

Now it is a Long Island Iced Tea, not a Grateful Dead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people search for after Googling this drink.

How strong is it?
Around 22 percent ABV. Five spirits stack.
Why is it called Grateful Dead?
The Chambord float looks like a deep red dawn over the glass. Some bartenders connect the name to the band’s tie-dye colours.
Garnish?
Lemon wheel and a maraschino cherry.
Is this a Long Island variant?
Yes. Same template, different sweetener and float.
Can I make it without Chambord?
Drop the float and the drink is a Long Island. Keep the float and the drink earns its name.
