What it tastes like

Heavy vanilla, dark caramel, dried orange peel, bitter cocoa, and a wine-driven base. More aromatic and more bitter than supermarket sweet vermouth. The base wine is a serious wine, not the cheap stuff.

Drinks like a fortified dessert wine that’s earned its place at the bar. Refrigerate after opening; lasts about a month before quality drops.

How to drink it

Manhattan, Vieux Carre, Hanky Panky, Negroni (especially Boulevardier), any stirred drink that calls for sweet vermouth. The premium upgrade.

Decent on its own over ice with an orange twist. The brand actively encourages this serve.

Vermouth, invented in Turin

Antonio Benedetto Carpano allegedly invented sweet vermouth in Turin in 1786, blending fortified wine with herbs and spices. The Antica Formula recipe revives that original style. The brand sat dormant for decades and was relaunched in the 2000s.

Branca (the Fernet-Branca family) took over production. Their long history with bitter spirits shows in the bottle: Antica is more bitter and more characterful than the lighter Italian sweet vermouths.

Why bartenders pay the price

Most cocktail recipes saying sweet vermouth assume something like Cinzano Rosso or Martini Rosso. Antica is louder. A Manhattan with Antica is darker and richer than the textbook version. Some bartenders prefer Cocchi Vermouth di Torino for that reason; others insist on Antica for the vanilla weight.
