What liqueurs actually do
Liqueur is the bridge in most classic cocktails. The Negroni needs Campari. The Margarita needs Cointreau. The Espresso Martini needs coffee liqueur. The Old Fashioned does not, which makes it unusual.
Most home bars overinvest in spirits and underinvest in liqueurs. A bottle of Cointreau, Campari, sweet vermouth, and dry vermouth gives you access to a hundred classic cocktails before you’ve spent another dollar on spirits.
The five liqueurs every home bar needs
Cointreau (or any quality triple sec): Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Sidecar, Last Word.
Campari: Negroni, Boulevardier, Garibaldi.
Sweet vermouth (treat as a liqueur): Manhattan, Negroni, Boulevardier.
Dry vermouth (also a liqueur): Martini, Vesper, Negroni Bianco.
Coffee liqueur (Kahlua or Mr Black): Espresso Martini, White Russian, Black Russian.
After that, fruit liqueurs (Chambord, Crème de Cassis), cream liqueurs (Baileys), herbal liqueurs (Chartreuse, Benedictine, Aperol).

Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers to what people ask about the Bottle Library.
What is the difference between Cointreau and triple sec?
Cointreau is a brand of triple sec. Both are clear orange liqueurs. Cointreau (40 percent ABV) is the premium standard; cheap triple secs (15 to 25 percent) are sweeter, weaker, and more artificial. Cointreau is what bartenders pour.
Is Aperol a liqueur?
Yes. Aperol is a bitter Italian aperitif liqueur (11 percent ABV) flavoured with bitter orange, rhubarb, gentian, and cinchona. Best known as the Aperol Spritz.
Why does my Espresso Martini need coffee liqueur?
Espresso alone is bitter and watery. Coffee liqueur (Kahlua, Mr Black, Tia Maria) adds sweetness, body, and the rum or vodka base that gives the cocktail weight. The espresso provides the coffee character.
What is amaro?
An Italian bitter liqueur, usually drunk after dinner as a digestif. Common types: Aperol, Campari, Fernet-Branca, Amaro Lucano, Averna, Cynar. Each has a different botanical profile. Most also work brilliantly in cocktails.
What is the best vermouth?
For sweet vermouth: Carpano Antica Formula (premium) or Cinzano Rosso (everyday). For dry: Dolin Dry or Noilly Prat. Both must be refrigerated after opening; vermouth is wine.
