Mr Black Coffee Liqueur

Mr Black Coffee Liqueur

The Espresso Martini’s secret weapon. Mr Black is an Australian cold-brew coffee liqueur, less sweet than Kahlua, with the actual coffee front and centre. The bottle that turned a sweet weeknight cocktail into a serious one. Bartenders won’t shut up about it for a reason.

What it tastes like

Real espresso, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, gentle bitterness, dry finish. Mr Black uses cold-brewed Arabica coffee from multiple origins, much less sugar than Kahlua, and a drier style throughout.

Drinks at 25% ABV with structure. Tastes like coffee with alcohol, not coffee-flavoured liqueur.

How to drink it

Espresso Martini (the modern dry version), Black Manhattan, neat over ice, or a Mr Black tonic. The brand effectively reinvented the Espresso Martini.

Decent neat. Lovely over a single rock with an orange peel. Genuinely a sipping liqueur, which Kahlua isn’t.

Mr Black’s Sydney coffee culture

Mr Black was founded in 2013 by Tom Baker and Philip Moore in Erina, New South Wales. The brand grew out of Sydney’s specialty coffee scene and was deliberately built to be different from the soft, sweet coffee liqueurs that dominated the category.

Diageo acquired the brand in 2022. Production has stayed in Erina, the recipe hasn’t changed, the founders are still involved.

Why Espresso Martinis got serious

The Espresso Martini was invented in 1983 with Kahlua. By the 2010s the cocktail had been everywhere for thirty years and was considered a sweet, easy weeknight drink. Mr Black launched and bartenders started rebuilding the recipe with a drier, coffee-forward base. Sales of both Mr Black and the cocktail itself exploded.

Best cocktails to make with Mr Black Coffee Liqueur

Mr Black is the modern Espresso Martini standard. Also brilliant in stirred coffee cocktails and neat.

Substitutions and swaps

Mr Black is the dry coffee liqueur upgrade.

Recipe says coffee liqueur?

Mr Black is the dry pick. Drink will be much less sweet.

Recipe says Kahlua?

Mr Black at 1:1 is fine but reduce other sweeteners since Mr Black is drier.

Out of Mr Black?

Borghetti is the closest dry substitute. Kahlua plus a teaspoon of cold brew is a desperate sub.

Espresso Martini without espresso?

Mr Black has enough coffee to skip fresh espresso, though the drink is less aromatic.

Want a sweeter cocktail?

Use Kahlua or Tia Maria instead. Or add a teaspoon of demerara syrup to balance.

Skip if

You like sweet coffee liqueur. Kahlua and Tia Maria are sweeter.

You’re making White Russians where the cream and sugar are the point. Kahlua’s sweetness suits.

You’re on a budget. Kahlua does the job for two-thirds the price.

Where to buy Mr Black Coffee Liqueur

Where to buy

Mr Black is at most decent bottle shops and most cocktail-leaning supermarkets. Australian price stays fair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mr Black coffee liqueur?

Mr Black is an Australian cold-brew coffee liqueur made in Erina, NSW, since 2013. It uses cold-brewed Arabica coffee from multiple origins, less sugar than typical coffee liqueurs, and bottles at 25% ABV. Acquired by Diageo in 2022.

Is Mr Black good?

Yes, exceptionally. It is the modern coffee liqueur benchmark and a fixture on serious cocktail menus.

What does Mr Black taste like?

Real espresso, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, gentle bitterness, dry finish. Drier and more coffee-forward than Kahlua. Tastes like cold brew with alcohol.

Mr Black vs Kahlua?

A modern Espresso Martini: 45ml vodka, 30ml Mr Black, 30ml fresh espresso, 10ml simple syrup, shake very hard with lots of ice, strain into a chilled coupe.
