Kahlua coffee liqueur bottle on a dark bar.

Kahlua

Kahlua

The coffee liqueur that built a category. Sweet, syrupy, vanilla-rich, slightly artificial in the best way. Kahlua is what every Espresso Martini was originally built on, and what every White Russian still demands. Mr Black is fancier; Kahlua is better-known.

What it tastes like

Sweet coffee, vanilla, brown sugar, slight rum-cask warmth. The coffee character is dialled down behind a lot of sugar. Mr Black drinkers describe Kahlua as Coke-like; Kahlua drinkers think Mr Black tastes like burnt espresso. Both are right.

Drinks thick and sweet at 20% ABV. A small pour goes a long way.

How to drink it

Espresso Martini (classic recipe), White Russian, Mind Eraser, B-52, Mudslide. The drinks Kahlua was built for.

Skip it neat unless you want dessert in a glass. Skip it as the only sweetener in a cocktail: pair with vodka or espresso to balance the sugar.

Kahlua’s Mexican coffee story

Kahlua launched in 1936 in Veracruz, Mexico, made from arabica coffee beans grown in the region, infused with rum and sugar. The brand passed through several owners before Pernod Ricard bought it in 2005.

The Espresso Martini was invented by Dick Bradsell in London in the 1980s using Kahlua. Kahlua sales have ridden the Espresso Martini wave ever since.

Kahlua vs Mr Black

Different liqueurs. Kahlua is sweeter, lower coffee content, designed for cream-and-sweet drinks. Mr Black is drier, higher coffee, designed for cocktails where the espresso should taste like espresso. Both are legitimate; pick based on the drink.

Best cocktails to make with Kahlua

Kahlua does Espresso Martinis, White Russians, and any cream-coffee cocktail. The household-name coffee liqueur.

Kahlua is the soft, sweet coffee liqueur default.

Recipe says coffee liqueur?

Kahlua is the safe call. Mr Black is the dry, premium swap.

Recipe says Mr Black?

Kahlua will make the drink sweeter. Reduce simple syrup or sweetener to compensate.

Out of Kahlua?

Tia Maria is the closest substitute. Mr Black if you want more coffee character.

Want a less sweet Espresso Martini?

Sub Mr Black 1:1 and keep the rest of the recipe.

Want it without alcohol?

Cold brew concentrate plus simple syrup plus a teaspoon of vanilla extract is a non-alcoholic Kahlua substitute for cocktails.

Skip if

You want serious coffee character. Mr Black or Borghetti are the upgrades.

You want unsweetened. All coffee liqueurs are sweetened. Use cold brew if you want it dry.

You’re sipping neat and you want depth. Kahlua is a cocktail liqueur, not a sipper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is Kahlua?

Kahlua is a Mexican coffee liqueur made from arabica coffee beans grown in Veracruz. It is infused with rum, sugar, and vanilla, and bottled at 20% ABV. Founded in 1936; owned by Pernod Ricard since 2005.

Is Kahlua good?

For its job (mixing into White Russians and Espresso Martinis) yes, it is the textbook coffee liqueur. For sipping or for premium cocktails where coffee should be the star, Mr Black is the more serious option.

What does Kahlua taste like?

Sweet coffee, vanilla, brown sugar, slight rum-cask warmth. Sweeter than Mr Black, less bitter than Borghetti.

Kahlua vs Mr Black?

Kahlua is sweeter and softer. Mr Black is drier and fuller of coffee. Kahlua for soft, cream-based drinks; Mr Black for dry Espresso Martinis where coffee should lead.

How strong is Kahlua?

20% ABV, low for a liqueur. The lower proof and high sugar make it drink even gentler than the number suggests.

Can you drink Kahlua neat?

You can. Pour over ice. Some prefer it as a quick after-dinner pour. Most use it in cocktails.

Is Kahlua gluten-free?

Yes. The brand confirms it is gluten-free.

What is the best cocktail to make with Kahlua?

An Espresso Martini: 50ml vodka, 30ml fresh espresso, 20ml Kahlua, 10ml simple syrup, shake hard, strain. Or a White Russian: 50ml vodka, 25ml Kahlua, top with cream over ice.
