1800 Tequila Reposado

The chunky decanter bottle that defined a decade of Margaritas. Soft, sweet, easy, decanter-shaped, designed to sit on a home bar and not intimidate anyone. 1800 Reposado is more about consistency than character, and that’s an honest pitch.

What it tastes like

Soft cooked agave, light caramel, vanilla, gentle oak. Sweeter than Cazadores, less oak-driven than Herradura. Friendly, easy, predictable.

Drinks like a tequila that doesn’t want to argue with anything. Ideal for people who like tequila to be the warm note, not the loud one.

How to drink it

Margaritas (frozen and shaken), Palomas, Mexican Mules. Anywhere you want a soft reposado that won’t dominate.

Decent for sipping if you like sweeter tequilas. Skip it in stirred drinks where you want oak and pepper to do real work.

The 1800 of the bottle

Named after 1800, the year tequila was first aged in oak. Made by Casa Cuervo (the Jose Cuervo family). Now owned by Proximo Spirits, the same group behind Bushmills and Stranahan’s.

The angular decanter bottle launched in the late 90s and turned 1800 into a household name. The trapezoidal cap is annoying; the shape sells.

Why 1800 sells the way it does

1800 is the safe call. Sweeter than the bartender favourites, more polished than the bargains, expensive enough to feel like a treat but not so expensive that it has to live in a cabinet. The juice meets people where they are.

Substitutions and swaps

1800 Reposado swaps in for any soft reposado call.

Recipe says reposado?

1800 is fine. Drink will run sweeter than with Cazadores or Herradura.

Recipe says blanco?

1800 Silver from the same family is the better swap. Reposado adds oak.

Want oakier?

Herradura Reposado or any anejo is the upgrade.

Out of triple sec?

1800 plus lime plus agave nectar makes a soft Tommy’s-style Margarita.

Want a punchier reposado?

Cazadores or Espolon Reposado are louder.

Skip if

You want pronounced oak character. 1800 plays softer than Herradura.

You’re making bitter stirred drinks. Cazadores or Herradura push back better.

You want bargain-shelf pricing. Espolon and Cazadores are similar money for more character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is 1800 Reposado tequila?

1800 Reposado is a 100% blue agave reposado tequila made by Casa Cuervo in Tequila, Jalisco. It rests in French and American oak for at least four months and bottles at 40% ABV. Owned by Proximo Spirits.

Is 1800 Reposado good tequila?

It is decent and consistent. Not the most characterful reposado at the price, but a friendly, easy-drinking option. Cazadores is more interesting; Herradura is richer; 1800 is more polished and approachable.

What does 1800 Reposado taste like?

Soft cooked agave, light caramel, vanilla, and gentle oak. Sweeter and rounder than Cazadores Reposado.

1800 vs Cazadores Reposado, which is better?

Cazadores has more agave and pepper. 1800 is softer and sweeter. Cazadores for cocktails that need backbone; 1800 for easy Margaritas where softness is the goal.

Why is 1800 expensive?

Premium-tier shelf positioning, fancy bottle, broad distribution, large marketing spend. The juice is solid; the price reflects the brand investment.

Can you drink 1800 Reposado neat?

Yes. It is one of the easier reposados to sip neat thanks to the soft profile.

Is 1800 Reposado gluten-free?

Yes. 100% blue agave, no grain, naturally gluten-free.

What is the best cocktail to make with 1800 Reposado?

A Margarita on the sweeter side, or a Mexican Mule with ginger beer, lime, and bitters. Both let the soft profile shine.
