What it tastes like

Earthy cooked agave, fresh herbs, citrus zest, a long mineral finish. The tahona stone press leaves more of the agave fibre character in the spirit, which is exactly what you want for cocktails.

38% ABV is technically lower than the standard 40, but the spirit doesn’t taste thin. Plenty of body for the price.

How to drink it

Tommy’s Margarita, Paloma, Ranch Water, frozen drinks. Anywhere you want real agave at honest money. Altos Plata pushes through citrus and ice as well as anything double the price.

Decent neat in a small pour, though it isn’t a polished sipper. Olmeca Altos Reposado is the sipping version.

Olmeca Altos was created in 2009 by Henry Besant and Dre Masso, two London bartenders, in collaboration with Master Distiller Jesus Hernandez. The brief was specific: build a cocktail-grade tequila with traditional production methods at a price working bars could actually afford.

Tahona-pressed and double-distilled. That production should put it in the 60-dollar bracket. Pernod Ricard chose to keep it under 30.
