The 100 percent agave rule
If a tequila bottle does not say 100 percent agave on the label, do not buy it. It is mixto (mixed): 51 percent agave plus 49 percent neutral spirit and additives. Mixto tequila is the reason hangovers exist.
Every quality tequila on this list is 100 percent agave. Pay the few dollars more. Your head tomorrow will thank you.
Blanco, reposado, anejo, what is the difference?
Blanco (silver): unaged or aged less than 60 days. Brightest agave character, best for Margaritas.
Reposado: aged 2 to 12 months in oak. Softer, slightly oaky. Brilliant for Old Fashioneds and Oaxacan Old Fashioneds.
Anejo: aged 1 to 3 years. Sip it neat. Wasted in mixed drinks.
Mezcal: smoky cousin. Different category, same agave family. The Oaxacan Old Fashioned is built on it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers to what people ask about the Bottle Library.
What is the best tequila for a Margarita?
100 percent agave blanco. Espolon, Olmeca Altos, Cazadores, Don Julio Blanco are all great. Patron Silver works but is overpriced for what it is. For a top-shelf Margarita: Don Julio 1942 (anejo) is the cult favourite.
Is Patron good tequila?
Yes, but expensive for what it is. Patron Silver and Reposado are quality 100 percent agave tequilas at premium prices. Cheaper bottles deliver similar quality (Espolon, Cazadores). Patron pays for marketing as much as quality.
Anejo vs reposado?
Reposado is aged 2 to 12 months, lightly oaky. Anejo is aged 1 to 3 years, more intense oak. Reposado is the cocktail tequila; anejo is the sipping tequila.
What is mezcal?
Tequila is technically a type of mezcal. All mezcal is made from agave. The difference is region, agave species, and process. Mezcal is usually smokier because the agave hearts are roasted in earth pits before fermentation. Tequila uses ovens.
Why does cheap tequila give worse hangovers?
Mixto tequila (less than 100 percent agave) contains added sugars, glycerin, caramel colour, and other stuff your liver has to process. The hangover is your liver’s revenge.
