Herradura Reposado

Eleven months in American white oak. Almost a year, which is double the legal minimum. Herradura Reposado tastes more like a young anejo than a young reposado, full of caramel, oak, and cooked agave. The premium reposado that earns its keep at the dinner table.

What it tastes like

Heavy on caramel, vanilla, butter, oak. Cooked agave underneath rather than out front. The eleven-month rest pulls the spirit toward anejo territory, with a long round finish and a sweetness that reads as butterscotch.

Drinks like a serious sipper. Plenty of body, plenty of oak character, surprisingly little burn at 40%.

How to drink it

Tequila Old Fashioned, Oaxaca Old Fashioned (with mezcal float), Tequila Manhattan. Anywhere you want barrel and bitters to push the agave forward.

Lovely sipped neat. Skip it in light Margaritas where the oak overwhelms the citrus.

The oldest active tequila distillery

Casa Herradura was founded in 1870 in Amatitan, Jalisco. The distillery still uses traditional cooking in stone ovens and has its own agave fields. Brown-Forman (the Jack Daniel’s parent) bought the brand in 2007.

Herradura’s signature is long resting periods. The reposado rests eleven months, longer than any major mainstream reposado. The result is a tequila that confuses people who think they know the category.

Why pros respect it

Herradura is one of the few mainstream tequilas you’ll see on bar back walls in serious cocktail rooms. The juice is the reason. The eleven-month rest and traditional production give it real complexity, and the price stays sub-100, which is rare for tequila of this calibre.

Best cocktails to make with Herradura Reposado

Herradura Reposado wants stirred drinks: Tequila Old Fashioned, Manhattan-style cocktails, anything where oak and bitters can play together.

Substitutions and swaps

Herradura is the upmarket reposado swap. Treat it like a premium pour.

Recipe says reposado?

Herradura is the upgrade. Drink runs richer and oakier. Best in stirred drinks.

Recipe says anejo?

Herradura Reposado is closer to anejo than most reposados. Honest swap if you don’t have anejo.

Recipe says blanco?

Herradura will dominate. Reach for Espolon Blanco or Olmeca Altos Plata if you want the agave clean.

Margarita?

Cazadores or Espolon Reposado are better Margarita reposados. Save Herradura for stirred.

Want it smokier?

A teaspoon of mezcal floated on top is the move. Sub the whole pour and you waste the Herradura.

Skip if

You want bright agave. Herradura buries it under barrel.

You’re making a light citrus Margarita. The oak will fight the lime.

You’re on a budget. Cazadores Reposado does most of the same jobs at half the money.

Yes, very good. It is one of the most respected mainstream reposados, with longer barrel resting than any major competitor. Closer to a young anejo than a typical reposado.

What does Herradura Reposado taste like?

Caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, and warm oak with cooked agave underneath. Richer and oakier than most reposados.

Why is Herradura Reposado rested so long?

Because Casa Herradura built its identity on long resting. The legal minimum for reposado is two months; Herradura goes to eleven. The brand believes the extra time is worth the lost volume.

What is the best cocktail to make with Herradura Reposado?

A Tequila Old Fashioned: 60ml Herradura, 5ml agave nectar, two dashes Angostura, orange peel. The barrel and the bitters do the heavy lifting and the agave shows up at the end.
