Shit on the grass Shot

Green creme de menthe on the bottom, Irish cream floated on top. Two layers, two ingredients, named for what the green and brown look like in the glass. Honest about itself, drinks like a chocolate-mint dessert.

The Shit on the grass shot, is a layered shot, green on the bottom, brown on top. It is a creamy, minty shot that is easy to make and drink. If you like peppermint you will also like this. I have heard of people substituting the Irish Cream with Coffee Liqueur, and or the Peppermint with Melon Liqueur, But I found swaping either ingredient will make the brown sink to the bottom becoming more of a Shit in the Grass, rather than a Shit on the grass. Give them a try and let us know what you think.

Where the name came from

Pub humour. Irish cream floats on creme de menthe and the result looks like a brown lump on a green field. The name has been used since the 1980s and shows up under both Shit on the Grass and Grasshopper Shot in different bars.

It is a sister drink to the Springbok shot, which uses the same ingredients in different proportions and a cleaner name.

What it tastes like

Cool peppermint up front, sweet Irish cream behind it, the two flavours combine into a chocolate-mint chip ice cream taste. Cold ingredients only or the layer collapses.

It is a Christmas shot in a lot of pubs. Goes well after a meal, ruins your night before one.

White creme de menthe with a drop of green colouring.

No Baileys?

Heavy cream sweetened with vanilla syrup.

Want a Springbok?

Same ingredients, equal parts shaken with ice. Different drink, similar palate.

Want it boozier?

Add a 5 ml float of vodka on top of the Baileys.

Want a chocolate top?

Drizzle chocolate syrup on top. Now it is more dessert than shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people search for after Googling this drink.

Why does the Baileys float?
Density. Baileys is lighter than creme de menthe so it sits on top if poured slowly.
How strong is it?
Around 22 percent ABV. Both ingredients are in the 17 to 30 percent range.
Can I make it without alcohol?
Mint syrup and condensed milk thinned with cream gives the same direction without the proof.
Can it be batched?
Pre-pour the creme de menthe into a tray, float Baileys on each one as you serve.
Why not white creme de menthe?
Loses the visual joke. White and brown is just an ugly shot.
