Whiskey Bottles in the Drink Lab Bottle Library

Whiskey bottles ranked. Bourbon, rye, Tennessee, Irish, Scotch, Japanese, Canadian. Which to mix, which to sip, which to skip.

How whiskey actually splits

American: bourbon (corn-led, sweet) and rye (rye-led, spicy). Tennessee whiskey is bourbon plus a charcoal-mellowing step (Jack Daniel’s). Most cocktail recipes that call for whiskey want bourbon by default; a few (Sazerac, classic Manhattan) want rye.

Irish: triple-distilled, smoother, no peat. Scotch: single malt or blended, often peated. Japanese: built on Scotch tradition with softer character. Canadian: light, easy, often used in mixed drinks.

What whiskey actually suits which cocktail

Old Fashioned, Mint Julep: bourbon (Maker’s Mark, Buffalo Trace).

Manhattan, Sazerac: rye for traditional, bourbon for soft.

Whiskey Sour: bourbon for the canonical, rye for drier.

Highball: Japanese whisky (Suntory Toki, Nikka Days) or Johnnie Walker Black.

Long drinks (Jack and Coke, Jameson and ginger): whatever’s in the bottle.

Penicillin: blended Scotch + Islay single malt float.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about the Bottle Library.

What is the best whiskey for a beginner?

Jameson Irish or Maker’s Mark bourbon. Both are smooth, sweet, accessible, and forgiving. Either gets you drinking whiskey without flinching.

Bourbon vs whiskey, what is the difference?

All bourbon is whiskey, not all whiskey is bourbon. Bourbon is American, must be at least 51% corn, aged in new charred oak, no additives. Other whiskeys (Scotch, Irish, rye, Tennessee, Japanese, Canadian) follow different rules. Bourbon is the sweet, vanilla-led one.

Which whiskey is best for an Old Fashioned?

Bourbon. Maker’s Mark or Buffalo Trace are the easy answers. Rye whiskey makes a drier Old Fashioned (the Wisconsin and Sazerac-belt traditional version). Read our individual brand pages for the deeper take.

What is rye whiskey?

American whiskey that uses at least 51% rye in the mashbill. Drier and spicier than bourbon. Bulleit Rye and Rittenhouse Rye are the widely available bottles. Best for Manhattans, Sazeracs, and anything that wants whiskey with bite.

Is Johnnie Walker Black good?

Yes. It is one of the best blended Scotches at its price. Read our Johnnie Walker page for the full take.

What is the difference between Scotch and Irish whiskey?

Scotch is from Scotland, often peated, double-distilled. Irish is from Ireland, never peated (almost always), triple-distilled. Irish is meaningfully smoother as a result.
