Where it came from

Coloured tequila highballs are a 1990s trend. The Black Mamba uses blue curacao plus grenadine over cola to produce a deep purple-black drink in the glass. Named after the snake.

Some bars list it as Black Magic or Midnight Tequila. Recipe is essentially the same. The colour is the draw, the flavour is closer to a tropical Cuba Libre.

What it tastes like

Cola sweetness on the lead, agave tequila in the middle, a faint orange peel from the curacao. Grenadine sits at the back and gives a pomegranate sweetness.

Cold ice and fresh cola are essential. Flat cola ruins the drink. Plenty of ice keeps it moving.
