Where it came from
Energy drink cocktails went mainstream after Red Bull launched in the 1980s in Europe and the late 1990s in the US. The Whisky Bull is the bourbon answer to the Vodka Red Bull. Same template, different base spirit.
It was a fixture in college bars and stayed on chain menus because it sells. Two-ingredient drinks travel well and the energy soda hides whatever bourbon you are using.
What it tastes like
Sweet caramel-citrus on the lead from the Red Bull, vanilla and oak from the bourbon on the mid, a long warm finish. The drink does not pretend to be subtle and it does not need to.
An orange peel twist over the glass adds a citrus oil that pulls the bourbon forward. Skip the twist and the drink is fine but flatter.

- Why
- The citrus oils tie the energy drink to the bourbon
Why the Whisky Bull works (Jack Daniel’s + Red Bull, done right)
Bourbon highball with energy drink. The bourbon depth lifts the Red Bull from gas station to bar.
The technique
Build over fresh ice in a tall glass. Pour 45ml of bourbon, top with chilled Red Bull (about 180ml). Stir twice gently. Garnish with a lemon wheel.
The whisky changes the drink fundamentally vs Vodka Red Bull. The bourbon’s caramel and vanilla notes round out Red Bull’s sharp citrus profile. Drinks more like a long Manhattan than an energy cocktail.
Brand picks
Bourbon: Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 is the canonical choice. Jim Beam White Label works for a sharper finish. Wild Turkey 101 if you want more burn. Avoid high-end bourbons (Pappy, Blanton’s, Eagle Rare) – Red Bull obliterates the nuance.
Red Bull: Original silver can. Red Bull Tropical or Watermelon flavors throw the drink off – the unflavored is what plays with bourbon. Sugarfree is acceptable but changes the body.
Garnish: Lemon wheel is the proper finish – the citrus bridges bourbon and Red Bull. Some bars use a maraschino cherry; that’s a Pickleback move, not a Whisky Bull.
Common mistakes
Using premium bourbon. Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve are wasted here. Red Bull’s flavor profile drowns the spirit subtlety.
Stirring aggressively. Kills the carbonation. Two gentle stirs only.
Skipping the garnish. The lemon wheel matters. Without it, the drink reads as “bourbon + energy drink.” With it, it reads as a proper highball.
Pacing. Like Vodka Red Bull, the caffeine masks alcohol impairment. One per hour, max.
What if I don't have…
Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.
Rye, Canadian whisky or even Scotch all work.
Monster Ultra, Rockstar Pure Zero or a generic energy drink.
Use sugar-free Red Bull and a sturdier bourbon.
Add a splash of soda water on top.
Use Red Bull Yellow Edition with a tropical bourbon like Eagle Rare.
