Where it came from
Canadian whisky cocktails opened up in the 1980s when peach schnapps became a bar staple. The Canadian Pussy is part of the same wave that gave us the Fuzzy Navel and the Sex on the Beach. Sweet schnapps plus juice plus a base spirit.
Canadian whisky works here because it is generally lighter and sweeter than American bourbon or Scotch. Crown Royal is the standard pour.
What it tastes like
Peach jam up front, orange juice round through the middle, a soft whisky vanilla on the finish. The whisky is felt more than tasted. Drinks easy, gets you in trouble.
Plenty of ice is essential. Without dilution the schnapps takes over and the drink goes syrupy.

Ingredient Spotlight
The bottles that make or break this drink.
The whisky
- Use
- Crown Royal, Canadian Club or Forty Creek
- Why
- You want a soft Canadian whisky, not a heavy bourbon
The peach schnapps
- Use
- DeKuyper Peachtree or Bols Peach
- Skip
- Peach syrup, no alcohol no balance
The orange juice
- Use
- Fresh squeezed or smooth from a carton
- Skip
- From-concentrate, too acidic against the schnapps
What if I don't have…
Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.
American whiskey works but the drink goes drier. Bourbon adds vanilla and oak.
Peach liqueur from any brand. Marie Brizard or Mathilde.
Pineapple juice for tropical or apple juice for closer to original.
Use 60 ml of whisky and cut the OJ to 60 ml as well.
Top with ginger ale. Now it is a Whisky Peach Spritz.
