What it tastes like
Campfire smoke, cooked agave, lime peel, white pepper, a touch of green herb. The smoke is medium, not aggressive. There’s room for the agave underneath.
Drinks at 42% with real body. Vida has more presence than its price suggests, which is why it became the bartender default.
How to drink it
Mezcal Margarita, Mezcal Mule, Mezcal Negroni. Or a teaspoon-to-half-ounce splash into any tequila cocktail to add smoke. That split is the move.
Sip neat with a slice of orange and a pinch of sal de gusano if you have it. Skip it in delicate floral cocktails where the smoke takes over.

How Vida normalised mezcal
Del Maguey was founded by artist Ron Cooper in 1995, importing single-village mezcals from Oaxaca to a market that didn’t yet know what mezcal was. The Vida bottling launched in 2010 specifically as a cocktail-grade mezcal: traditional production, scaled enough to keep the price under 50 dollars.
Pernod Ricard bought the brand in 2017. The Vida bottling kept its character. The category has never looked back.
Vida vs Del Maguey single-village mezcals
Vida is the entry-level, slightly higher-volume bottling. Del Maguey’s single-village mezcals (Chichicapa, San Luis del Rio, Minero, Tobala) are smaller production, more characterful, and meant for sipping. Vida is meant for cocktails, and cocktails are what made it famous.
Best cocktails to make with Del Maguey Vida Mezcal
Del Maguey Vida brings the smoke. Use it in mezcal cocktails or splash it into tequila drinks for an upgrade.

Substitutions and swaps
Vida is the all-rounder mezcal. Sub it for almost any espadin call.
Vida is the safe call. Bartender default.
Vida is exactly what to use. Around 1:3 mezcal-to-tequila is the standard ratio.
Ilegal Reposado or Sombra are louder. Vida is medium-smoky on purpose.
A small float of Islay scotch (Laphroaig) gives a rough smoke approximation but it’s not a proper mezcal substitute.
Don’t sub Vida. It will dominate. A teaspoon as a float is fine; full sub is not.
You’re new to smoky spirits. Vida is medium-smoky but it can still surprise. Try it in a cocktail first.
You’re making delicate floral drinks. Smoke wins, the floral disappears.
You’re shooting it. Vida is too good (and too expensive) to be slammed back. Sip it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.
What is Del Maguey Vida mezcal?
Del Maguey Vida is an espadin mezcal from San Luis del Rio in Oaxaca, Mexico. Traditional production: pit-roasted agave, stone-mill crushed, fermented in open wooden vats, distilled in copper pot stills. Bottled at 42% ABV. Owned by Pernod Ricard.
Is mezcal the same as tequila?
Tequila is a kind of mezcal, technically. Both are agave spirits made in Mexico. Tequila is from one specific agave (blue Weber) in defined regions. Mezcal can be from many agaves and many regions, traditionally pit-roasted (which gives the smoke).
Is Del Maguey Vida smoky?
Medium smoky. Not as aggressive as Mezcal Sombra or Ilegal Reposado, more pronounced than tequila. The smoke is balanced enough that you can taste the agave underneath.
How do you drink Del Maguey Vida?
In cocktails: Mezcal Margarita, Mezcal Mule, Mezcal Negroni. Or as a smoky splash inside a tequila drink (around 1:3 mezcal to tequila). You can also sip it neat with orange slices.
Vida vs other Del Maguey mezcals?
Vida is the cocktail-grade entry. Single-village bottlings (Chichicapa, San Luis del Rio, Minero) are smaller-batch, more characterful, more expensive, and built to sip neat.
Can you put Del Maguey Vida in a Negroni?
Yes, and it’s brilliant. Sub all or half the gin for Vida. The smoke pulls the bitter and sweet together in a way the gin can’t.
Is Del Maguey Vida gluten-free?
Yes. 100% agave, no grain, naturally gluten-free.
What is the best cocktail to make with Del Maguey Vida?
A Mezcal Margarita with fresh lime, agave nectar, and a salt-chili rim. Or a 1:3 mezcal-tequila Tommy’s Margarita. Both are entry-point cocktails for mezcal drinkers.
