Captain Morgan Original Spiced

The spiced rum that taught the world to drink rum and cola. Sweet, vanilla-heavy, not really rum the way purists mean it, but the bottle that put a pirate on every dorm room shelf for thirty years. Honest about what it is. Cheap, easy, fun.

What it tastes like

Vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking spice, soft butter. Less rum and more rum-flavoured liqueur, technically. Sweet enough that the cola adds almost nothing.

35% ABV is on the lighter side. Drinks gentle. Goes down easy. Catches up later.

How to drink it

Captain and cola, with a wedge of lime. The drink the brand was built for. Add ginger beer for a Captain Mule.

Skip it in tiki drinks where you want real rum character. Skip it neat: Captain Morgan was not designed to be sipped.

How a pirate became a brand

Captain Henry Morgan was a real Welsh privateer in the seventeenth century. The brand started in 1944 in Jamaica, moved through Puerto Rico and now blends and bottles in the US Virgin Islands. Diageo bought the brand in 2001 and turned it into a cultural fixture.

The Captain Morgan ad campaigns of the 2000s (Got A Little Captain In You?) defined a generation of college drinking. Polarising, profitable, hugely effective.

Spiced rum vs rum

Spiced rum is a category of flavoured, sweetened rum. Captain Morgan Original adds sugar, vanilla, and proprietary spices to its distillate. By Caribbean rum traditionalist standards it isn’t really rum, but it is the second-largest rum brand in the world.

Best cocktails to make with Captain Morgan Original Spiced

Captain Morgan wants cola. Also good with ginger beer or apple cider. Skip it in tiki cocktails.

How it stacks up

How Captain Morgan compares to other spiced and dark rums.

Rum Character Best for
Captain Morgan Original Sweet vanilla, baking spice Captain and cola, ginger beer
Sailor Jerry Spiced Drier, more cinnamon, fuller Tiki, ginger beer, sipping
The Kraken Black Spiced Dark, molasses, cardamom Cola, ginger beer, dark drinks
Goslings Black Seal Dark Bermuda rum, no spice Dark and Stormy, sipping
Bacardi Spiced Light, vanilla Cola, easy mixing

Substitutions and swaps

Captain Morgan is the soft, sweet spiced rum default.

Recipe says spiced rum?

Captain Morgan is the cheap call. Sailor Jerry or Kraken are the upgrades.

Recipe says dark rum?

Captain Morgan is too sweet. Use Goslings Black Seal, Mount Gay XO, or Appleton Estate.

Want more spice?

Sailor Jerry or Kraken bring louder cinnamon and clove.

Out of cola?

Captain plus ginger beer plus lime is the easy pivot.

Want unsweetened rum?

All spiced rums are sweetened. Switch to dark rum (Mount Gay, Appleton) for unsweetened.

Skip if

You want a tiki cocktail. Sweetened spiced rum stacks badly with curacao, syrups, and citrus.

You’re sipping neat. Captain Morgan is too sweet for that.

You want craft-cocktail-grade rum. This is honest mass-market spiced rum, not bartender-grade spirit.
