What it tastes like

Vanilla, cinnamon, clove, allspice, lime peel, a warm woody finish. Drier and bigger than Captain Morgan: at 46% ABV with less sugar, the spices push through and the rum stays the rum.

Drinks rich and full. A genuinely useful cocktail spiced rum, not just a sweet pour.

How to drink it

Sailor Jerry Mule with ginger beer and lime. Spiced Daiquiri. Spiced Old Fashioned. Anywhere you want spice and rum to lead.

Decent shot if you must, less sweet than most spiced. Skip it neat at room temperature: this is a cocktail rum, not a sipper.

The tattoo artist behind the bottle

Sailor Jerry is named for Norman Collins (1911-1973), the Hawaiian tattoo artist whose flash defined American traditional tattooing. The brand launched in 1999 using Collins’s hula girl artwork on the label and recipes inspired by Caribbean naval rum traditions.

William Grant (the Glenfiddich and Hendrick’s parent) bought the brand in 2008 and has kept the production blend in the Caribbean.

Why Sailor Jerry beats Captain Morgan in a cocktail

46% ABV vs 35%, less sugar, a fuller spice profile. In a Mule or a spiced Daiquiri, Sailor Jerry stays present after dilution. Captain Morgan washes out.

Best cocktails to make with Sailor Jerry Spiced

Sailor Jerry mixes harder than other spiced rums. Mule, spiced Daiquiri, ginger and lime drinks all work.
