Where it came from

The Cocaine Lady belongs to the late 1990s era of named drinks designed to shock the table on the menu. The recipe is a Mudslide with extra rum and a cola top. There is no real story to it. Some bartender stretched a Mudslide and gave it a name.

Recipes drift. Some versions skip the cola, some add Kahlua and Tia Maria, some swap the cream for milk. The version most pubs pour is the one above.

What it tastes like

Sweet coffee, soft vanilla cream, a chocolate edge from the Kahlua and a fizzy cola lift at the back. The white rum and vodka stay quiet under the dairy. It drinks like an iced coffee that decided to ruin your evening.

Watch the temperature. Warm cola plus dairy plus rum gets heavy fast. Everything ice cold and the drink stays clean.

Ingredient Spotlight

The bottles that make or break this drink.

The coffee liqueur

Use
Kahlua, Tia Maria, or Mr Black if you can get it
Try
Mr Black for a less sweet result
Skip
Coffee syrup, no alcohol no body

The Irish cream

Use
Baileys Original
Why
You want the dairy fat to bind the cola and the spirits
Skip
Plant-based versions split with the cola, fine to drink, ugly in the glass

The cola top

Use
Coke Original, ice cold, fresh can
Why
The bubbles cut through the cream and lighten the whole drink
Skip
Diet cola, the artificial sweetener clashes with the cream

Variations

Other drinks in the same family.

What if I don't have…

Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.

No Irish cream?

Use double cream plus a teaspoon of vanilla syrup. Not identical but works.

No coffee liqueur?

1 shot of cold espresso plus a teaspoon of brown sugar.

No cola?

Skip it. The drink without the cola is a Mudslide, a respected drink in its own right.

No light cream?

Whole milk works. Half-and-half is closer to the original.

Want it less sweet?

Cut the Kahlua to 15 ml and skip the cola. The cream and rum still carry it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people search for after Googling this drink.

Why is it called Cocaine Lady?
Pure shock-value branding. The drink itself is just a souped-up Mudslide. The name shows up on shock-titled menu sections.
Is this the same as a White Russian?
Same family. White Russian is vodka, Kahlua and cream. The Cocaine Lady adds rum, Baileys and a cola top.
How strong is it?
About 14 percent ABV in the glass once it is built tall over ice.
Can the cream curdle?
Only if the cola is warm or you skip the ice. Cold cola plus cold cream stays bound.
Can I make it without alcohol?
Use cold brew coffee, cream, vanilla syrup and cola. It is not the same drink but it tastes good.
