Where it came from
Overproof rum shots made the rounds in the 1980s and 1990s when 151 was the easy way to make a shot feel hard. The Gorilla’s Fart pairs banana liqueur with vodka and 151 to give the funk a sweet front end.
It is a college bar staple. Cheap to build, big in flavour, gets noticed when it goes on the table. The name does the rest of the work.
What it tastes like
Sweet ripe banana from the liqueur, a clean alcohol burn from the vodka, and a long warm finish from the 151. The banana is meant to soften the rum but it never quite gets there.
It drinks better cold. Room temperature and the rum dominates everything. Out of the freezer it goes down clean and the banana actually shows up.

Ingredient Spotlight
The bottles that make or break this drink.
The overproof rum
- Use
- Bacardi 151 or Wray and Nephew White Overproof
- Why
- The high alcohol is the joke and the heat
- Skip
- Standard rum, the shot loses its name
The banana liqueur
- Use
- Giffard Banane du Bresil or Bols Banana
- Try
- Tempus Fugit Creme de Banane
- Skip
- Banana flavoured vodka, all sugar no banana
Service
- Use
- Glasses kept in the freezer for 30 minutes
- Order
- Vodka first, banana, 151 last
- Why
- Cold flattens the burn enough to taste the banana
What if I don't have…
Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.
Wray and Nephew or any overproof rum. If you only have standard rum, double the vodka instead.
Banana syrup at half volume plus 5 ml of cream of coconut to mimic the texture.
Use 100 proof rum and double the banana liqueur. Same flavour, less heat.
Pour over ice and top with pineapple juice. Now it is a Banana Daiquiri with attitude.
White rum works, you just go all rum. Stronger shot, same direction.
