Gorilla’s Fart Shot Recipe

Vodka, overproof rum and banana liqueur, equal parts, served cold. Banana up front, kerosene at the back. Named for the smell coming off the glass when you pour the 151. Two ingredients of fun, one ingredient of regret.

Where it came from

Overproof rum shots made the rounds in the 1980s and 1990s when 151 was the easy way to make a shot feel hard. The Gorilla’s Fart pairs banana liqueur with vodka and 151 to give the funk a sweet front end.

It is a college bar staple. Cheap to build, big in flavour, gets noticed when it goes on the table. The name does the rest of the work.

What it tastes like

Sweet ripe banana from the liqueur, a clean alcohol burn from the vodka, and a long warm finish from the 151. The banana is meant to soften the rum but it never quite gets there.

It drinks better cold. Room temperature and the rum dominates everything. Out of the freezer it goes down clean and the banana actually shows up.

Ingredient Spotlight

The bottles that make or break this drink.

The overproof rum

Use
Bacardi 151 or Wray and Nephew White Overproof
Why
The high alcohol is the joke and the heat
Skip
Standard rum, the shot loses its name

The banana liqueur

Use
Giffard Banane du Bresil or Bols Banana
Try
Tempus Fugit Creme de Banane
Skip
Banana flavoured vodka, all sugar no banana

Service

Use
Glasses kept in the freezer for 30 minutes
Order
Vodka first, banana, 151 last
Why
Cold flattens the burn enough to taste the banana

Variations

Other drinks in the same family.

What if I don't have…

Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.

No 151?

Wray and Nephew or any overproof rum. If you only have standard rum, double the vodka instead.

No banana liqueur?

Banana syrup at half volume plus 5 ml of cream of coconut to mimic the texture.

Want it less aggressive?

Use 100 proof rum and double the banana liqueur. Same flavour, less heat.

Want it taller?

Pour over ice and top with pineapple juice. Now it is a Banana Daiquiri with attitude.

Out of vodka?

White rum works, you just go all rum. Stronger shot, same direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people search for after Googling this drink.

Why is it called Gorilla’s Fart?
The smell. Banana liqueur and overproof 151 in the same glass throws a tropical-and-petrol perfume that is exactly that bad.
How strong is the 151?
75.5 percent ABV. Roughly twice the proof of standard rum. One shot has the alcohol of two.
Can I light it on fire?
Bacardi 151 used to come with a flame arrester for that reason. The product is discontinued in some markets. If you do flame, do it in a dry glass and never lean over.
Is it really three equal parts?
Yes. 15 ml of each into a chilled shot glass. Stir or just pour straight in.
Can I batch it?
It separates fast because of the sugar in the banana liqueur. Build per shot and serve.
