Prep Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 2 minutes
Kahlua, vodka and soda water layered in a rocks glass and drunk through a straw from the bottom up. Coffee, vodka and fizz in one fast pull. Hence the name.

Ingredients

  • 30 ml Kahlua bottom layer
  • 30 ml vodka middle layer
  • 30 ml soda water top, fizzy
  • 1 cup ice half-fill the glass

Instructions

  • Half-fill a rocks glass with ice.
  • Pour the Kahlua over the ice.
  • Slowly pour the vodka over the back of a bar spoon to keep it separate.
  • Top with soda water for the fizzy layer.
  • Drop in a short straw, stuck near the bottom.
  • Drink the entire glass through the straw in one continuous pull.

Notes

The straw is the whole drink. You drink it from the bottom up, so the Kahlua hits first and hardest, then the vodka, then the fizzy soda chases it. Pulling the whole thing through a straw in one go is what makes it a Mind Eraser, not a White Russian without cream.

Where it came from

The Mind Eraser dates back to the late 1980s American college bar scene. It was designed as the “shot you can drink fast”, a longer pour than a standard shooter but consumed in one continuous pull through a straw.

It got its name from the speed at which it disappears and the speed at which the drinker forgets the rest of the night. The fizzy soda water was a deliberate choice; it makes the drink go down faster than a still version would.

Why a straw

The drink is layered: Kahlua on the bottom, vodka in the middle, soda on top. A straw lets you start at the bottom and pull the layers in order, so each one hits the back of your throat in sequence. Sipping or drinking from the rim mixes everything and ruins the trick.

Use a short cocktail straw. Long bendy straws make the pull weaker.

The Kahlua

Use
Standard Kahlua coffee liqueur
Try
Mr Black or Tia Maria for a stronger coffee note

Coffee syrup, no body, will not layer right

The vodka

Use
Any clean vodka, chilled if possible
Try
Vanilla or coffee-flavoured vodka for a richer drink
Skip
Citrus vodkas, the citrus clashes with the coffee

The soda water

Use
Plain soda water, freshly opened for max fizz
Try
Tonic for a slight bitter top

Sparkling sweetened drinks, they tip the balance

Variations

Other layered shots.

What if I don't have…

Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.

No Kahlua?

Tia Maria, Mr Black, or any coffee liqueur.

No vodka?

Any clean white spirit. White rum changes the drink to something tropical.

No soda water?

Tonic water or sparkling water. Sweetened sodas overload the drink.

Want it richer?

Add 15ml of cream on top. Now it is a “White Russian Mind Eraser”.

Want it bigger?

Double everything and use a highball. Same drink, twice as long.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people search for after Googling this drink.

What is in a Mind Eraser shot?

Three ingredients: Kahlua, vodka and soda water in equal parts (30ml each), layered in a rocks glass over ice and drunk through a straw.

Why is it called a Mind Eraser?

Because the whole drink disappears in one continuous pull through a straw, and the combination of fast vodka, sweet coffee liqueur and fizz tends to erase the rest of your evening. Late-1980s college bar slang.

How do you drink a Mind Eraser?

Stick a straw in near the bottom of the glass and drink the whole thing in one continuous pull, without stopping. The straw delivers the Kahlua first, then vodka, then soda. Stopping mid-pull breaks the trick.

What is the difference between a Mind Eraser and a Black Russian?

A Black Russian is Kahlua and vodka stirred together over ice (no soda, no straw). A Mind Eraser adds soda water and is consumed through a straw in one go. Same base spirits, different format and speed.

How strong is a Mind Eraser?

Around 18 to 20 percent ABV across the whole drink. The soda water dilutes it, but you drink the whole glass in one pull, so it lands hard.

Can I make a Mind Eraser without the straw?

You can drink it from the rim like any other rocks-glass cocktail, but it loses the layered hit and the speed factor. Without the straw it is essentially a fizzy Black Russian.

Is the layering important?

Yes. Layered means the Kahlua hits first when you suck through the straw, then vodka, then the fizzy soda finishes. Mixed up, all three blend into one flavour.

What food goes with a Mind Eraser?

It is dessert and dare in one glass. Pair with chocolate cake, brownies or a cheese plate, or use it as a digestif after a heavy meal.
