Where it came from

The Fallen Froggie is a 2000s American dessert shot named for the visual: bright green Midori with a red grenadine dot at the bottom, like a small frog that has fallen into the glass. Layered or shaken into a tall shot glass.

It sits in the dessert-shot family with the Buttery Nipple, the Slippery Nipple and the Quick Fuck. All four lean on a flavoured liqueur and an Irish cream component for the sweet, creamy finish. The Fallen Froggie separates itself with the Midori-and-grenadine pairing, which delivers the green-and-red visual and the melon-cream flavour.

Best ordered at a bachelorette party or a sweet-tooth nightcap, not at a craft cocktail bar. The novelty name and the visual layered build are the marketing; the melon-and-cream flavour is the substance.

What it tastes like

Sweet honeydew melon up front, soft Irish cream through the middle, faint pomegranate sharpness on the finish from the grenadine drop. Reads like a melon-and-cream dessert in liquid form, with the grenadine adding a sweet-and-tart accent.

Around 17 percent ABV in the glass once shaken. Three quarters of an ounce of Midori (20 percent ABV) and a quarter ounce of Irish cream (17 percent ABV) means the shot drinks closer to a dessert pour than a hard shot, but still adds up to a small standard drink.

The technique

Pour three quarters of an ounce of Midori melon liqueur into a tall shot glass. Float a quarter ounce of Irish cream over the back of a bar spoon to create a layered shot. Drop two to five drops of grenadine through the centre of the cream layer; the grenadine sinks through the Midori to form a red dot at the bottom of the glass.

The grenadine drops are the signature. Use the back of a chilled bar spoon or an eyedropper for control; too much grenadine breaks the visual and pulls the shot toward a candy-like profile. Layer technique matters: the Irish cream must float cleanly on top of the Midori for the layered build to work.

Ingredient Spotlight

The bottles that make or break this drink.

The Midori

Use
Midori melon liqueur or any honeydew-based green melon liqueur.
Skip
Watermelon schnapps or apple liqueur. Wrong colour and wrong flavour.
Why
Midori is the load-bearing flavour and the visual signature. The bright green honeydew character is what gives the shot its colour and its melon flavour; without it the shot loses its Fallen Froggie visual entirely.

The Irish cream

Use
Bailey's, Carolans, or Five Farms.
Skip
Heavy cream or coconut cream. Different texture and no alcohol.
Why
The Irish cream is the float layer and the texture. The dairy-and-whisky combination layers cleanly on top of the Midori and softens the melon sweetness; without it the shot is just sweet melon liqueur.

The grenadine drop

Use
Two to five drops of pomegranate-based grenadine through the centre.
Skip
Cherry syrup or maraschino liqueur. Wrong colour and wrong flavour.
Why
The grenadine drop is the visual signature and the name source. A small drop sinks through the Midori to form a red dot at the bottom of the glass, mimicking a fallen frog; more than five drops breaks the visual and the cocktail balance.

Three Variations

Three real ways bartenders riff on this drink. Same idea, three different jackets.

The standard build

Fallen Froggie, layered
Three quarters of an ounce of Midori in a tall shot glass, a quarter ounce of Irish cream floated on top, two to five drops of grenadine through the centre.

The shaken build

Fallen Froggie, shaken
Same ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake hard for five seconds. Strain into a chilled shot glass. Drop the grenadine on top after pouring. Loses the layered look but blends the flavour evenly.

The Aussie build

Fallen Froggie, with lime
Add a half ounce of fresh lime juice to the standard build. Pulls the cocktail toward a melon-margarita profile and adds a citrus snap.

What if I don't have…

Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.

No Midori?

Bols Melon or De Kuyper Melon. Both work, both are slightly sweeter.

No Irish cream?

Heavy cream with a teaspoon of vanilla syrup. Loses the whisky note, holds the cream texture.

No grenadine?

Cherry syrup or pomegranate molasses. Different sweetness curve, holds the red-dot visual.

No bar spoon for layering?

Pour the Irish cream over the back of a regular tablespoon. Slower pour but the float still works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people search for after Googling this drink.

What is in a Fallen Froggie shot?

Three quarters of an ounce of Midori melon liqueur, a quarter ounce of Irish cream and two to five drops of grenadine, layered in a tall shot glass.

Why is it called a Fallen Froggie?

The visual: bright green Midori with a red grenadine dot at the bottom looks like a small frog that has fallen into the glass. The name describes the layered visual and the green-and-red colour story.

How strong is a Fallen Froggie shot?

Around 17 percent ABV in the glass once shaken. The shot drinks closer to a dessert pour than a hard spirit shot, but still adds up to a small standard drink.

What does it taste like?

Sweet honeydew melon up front, soft Irish cream through the middle, faint pomegranate sharpness on the finish. Reads like a melon-and-cream dessert in liquid form.

Should I shake or layer?

Either works. Layering preserves the visual signature and is the standard back-bar build; shaking blends the flavour evenly and is faster but loses the green-and-red colour story.

Can I make it without grenadine?

Possible but loses the name. The grenadine drop is what gives the shot its Fallen Froggie character; without it the shot is a plain layered Midori-and-cream pour.

What is Midori?

Midori is a Japanese honeydew melon liqueur, 20 percent ABV, made by Suntory and launched in 1978. The bright green colour and the sweet honeydew flavour make it the most recognisable melon liqueur on a back-bar shelf.

What other shots are similar?

A Buttery Nipple, a Slippery Nipple, a Scooby Snack and a Quick Fuck. All four sit in the dessert-shot family and use a flavoured liqueur and an Irish cream component for the sweet creamy finish.
