Darth Maultini

A Star Wars fan-bar martini built on cherry liqueur and three base spirits, served up in a chilled cocktail glass. The cherry does the colour, the lemon does the rim, the vodka and whisky do the work. Looks like Darth Maul, drinks like a Manhattan with a sweet tooth.

Where it came from

The Darth Maultini surfaced on Star Wars themed bar menus in the mid-2000s, around the run-up to Revenge of the Sith. The colour was the entire pitch: deep red cherry, rimmed with dark lemon zest, modelled on the Sith Lord’s painted face.

The recipe is older than the theme. Cherry liqueur with vodka and a splash of vermouth has been a sweet-martini staple since the 1970s. Adding Canadian whisky is the modern shift, it gives the drink a backbone the all-vodka original was missing.

It is a fan-bar drink. Conventions, themed pubs, anywhere with a movie-marathon menu. Not a cocktail-snob drink and not a sit-down dinner drink.

What it tastes like

Cherry up front, a long whisky middle, a vermouth bitterness on the finish. The lemon rim brightens the first sip and the rest reads as a slightly sweet Manhattan.

About 22 percent ABV in a martini glass. Three ounces of spirit and two ounces of cherry liqueur. Drinks like a strong sweet martini, sips like a fan-bar special.

The technique

Build in a shaker over ice. Sweet vermouth, vodka, Canadian whisky, cherry liqueur. Squeeze the lemon halves over the top and drop them in the shaker. Shake hard for ten seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass with a lemon-zest rim.

Chill the glass in the freezer first. The drink loses its colour fast in a warm glass.

Ingredient Spotlight

The bottles that make or break this drink.

The cherry liqueur

Use
Cherry Heering or a quality maraschino liqueur.
Skip
Cherry brandy with no real cherry weight.
Why
Cherry liqueur is the colour and the flavour. A weak cherry reads as cough syrup, a real one reads as fresh fruit.

The Canadian whisky

Use
Canadian Club, Crown Royal or a quality blended Canadian rye.
Skip
Peated Scotch. The smoke fights the cherry.
Why
Canadian whisky is the spine. Light enough to let the cherry sing, heavy enough to anchor the drink.

The lemon

Use
Two fresh lemon halves, squeezed and dropped in the shaker.
Skip
Bottled lemon juice. The rim work needs whole-fruit zest.
Why
The lemon is the rim, the brightener, and the cut against the cherry sweetness. All three jobs in one fruit.

Three Variations

Three real ways bartenders riff on this drink. Same idea, three different jackets.

The dressed-up version

Sith Lord
Use a sloe gin in place of the cherry liqueur and add a dash of Angostura bitters. Drier finish, still red.

The Aussie version

Aussie Maul
Swap the Canadian whisky for an Australian rye and use morello cherry juice instead of cherry liqueur. Drier and more savoury.

The party version

Maultini Pitcher
Multiply by six in a glass jug, stirred over ice with two lemons split into wedges. Pours like a punch.

What if I don't have…

Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.

No cherry liqueur?

Two ounces of cherry juice plus an extra half ounce of vodka. The colour holds, the sweetness drops slightly.

No Canadian whisky?

Bourbon or rye. Bourbon reads sweeter, rye reads sharper, both work.

No sweet vermouth?

A teaspoon of cherry brandy plus a teaspoon of red wine. Closer to the original than a dry vermouth swap.

No fresh lemon?

Bottled lemon juice plus a strip of lemon peel for the rim. Loses the squeeze drama, gains the practicality.
