Where it came from

Electric Fuzzy is a casual peach-schnapps highball in the Fuzzy Navel family, simplified to two ingredients for fast pouring. The standard Fuzzy Navel uses peach schnapps and orange juice; the Electric Fuzzy swaps the orange juice for lemonade, giving a brighter citrus finish. The recipe came out of casual bar culture where the lemonade option is the order when orange juice runs out.

It sits in the peach-schnapps family with the Fuzzy Navel, the Peach Daiquiri and the Bellini. All three lean on peach as the lead flavour with a contrasting mixer. Electric Fuzzy separates itself with the lemonade base, which gives a sharper citrus lift than orange juice and a cleaner finish than a peach daiquiri.

Best ordered at a poolside bar, a backyard party or any casual setting where a fast pour matters. The drink is approachable, peach-and-lemon, and works as a quick refreshing pour for a single drinker.

What it tastes like

Sweet peach schnapps up front, soft lemonade through the middle, sharp lemon-zest finish on the back palate. The two-to-one ratio keeps the drink from over-sweetening; the lemonade carries the volume and balances the peach. Reads as a casual highball, not a stiff cocktail.

Around 7 percent ABV in the glass once mixed. One part peach schnapps at 20 percent ABV plus two parts zero-ABV lemonade gives a low-strength long pour. Each highball glass holds about six ounces of the mixed drink with the ice in.

The technique

Fill a highball glass with ice cubes. Pour the peach schnapps over the ice, then add the lemonade to fill. Stir gently with a bar spoon, two or three turns, no shake. Drink across five to ten minutes before the ice over-dilutes.

The order is schnapps first, lemonade second. Pouring the lemonade first and the schnapps on top floats the peach character on the surface and reads layered rather than mixed; schnapps first then lemonade gives an even integration on the gentle stir.

Ingredient Spotlight

The bottles that make or break this drink.

The peach schnapps

Use
DeKuyper Peachtree Schnapps, Archers or any peach-flavoured schnapps at 20 percent ABV.
Skip
Peach liqueur or peach brandy. Wrong concentration.
Why
Peach schnapps is the lead flavour and the peach-skin texture. The 20 percent ABV format delivers the fuzzy peach character without overpowering the lemonade; peach liqueur runs hotter and peach brandy lacks the sweet peach-skin note.

The lemonade

Use
Sprite, 7Up or any zero-ABV lemon-lime soda.
Skip
Diet lemonade or sugar-free soda. Wrong sweetness curve.
Why
Full-sugar lemonade is the volume and the lemon-lime balance. The carbonation lifts the peach character on the first sip; diet versions read thin and lose the rounded finish.

Three Variations

Three real ways bartenders riff on this drink. Same idea, three different jackets.

The standard build

Electric Fuzzy, classic
One part peach schnapps, two parts lemonade, ice in a highball. Stir gently.

The strong build

Big Electric Fuzzy
One part peach schnapps to one part lemonade in the same highball. Stronger peach character, sweeter finish.

The dry build

Electric Fuzzy with soda
Swap the lemonade for soda water. Loses the sweetness, gains a drier peach finish.

What if I don't have…

Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.

No peach schnapps?

Apricot schnapps or peach liqueur. Different fruit angle, holds the schnapps role.

No lemonade?

Lemon-lime soda or Sierra Mist. Different brand profile, holds the carbonation and citrus role.

No highball glass?

Any tall glass works. The volume is the constraint, not the brand of glassware.

No ice?

Pour cold from the fridge into a chilled glass. Different texture, faster drinking time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people search for after Googling this drink.

What is in an Electric Fuzzy?

One part peach schnapps and two parts lemonade over ice in a highball glass. Two ingredients, casual highball pour.

Why is it called an Electric Fuzzy?

The Electric riffs on the bright lemonade lift compared to the standard Fuzzy Navel orange juice; the Fuzzy comes from the peach-schnapps base, named for the fuzzy peach-skin character. The lemonade swap puts the electric in the name.

How strong is an Electric Fuzzy?

Around 7 percent ABV in the glass once mixed and served over ice. Roughly equal to half a standard drink per six-ounce serving.

What does it taste like?

Sweet peach schnapps up front, soft lemonade through the middle, sharp lemon-zest finish on the back palate. Reads as a casual highball with the peach as the lead flavour.

Can I use orange juice instead?

Yes, that gives the standard Fuzzy Navel. The lemonade version reads sharper and brighter; the orange juice version reads softer and rounder.

What is the best lemonade?

Sprite or 7Up for the standard build. The lemon-lime profile cuts through the peach sweetness without adding more sugar; club soda works for the drier variation.

Can I batch Electric Fuzzy ahead?

Mix the peach schnapps and the lemonade in a pitcher up to one hour ahead and refrigerate. Pour over ice in highballs at service. The carbonation fades after about an hour, so build close to drinking time.

What other peach cocktails are similar?

A Fuzzy Navel, a Peach Daiquiri, a Bellini and a Peach Cosmopolitan. All four lean on peach as the lead flavour with a different mixer or technique.
