Combine Ingredients:
- In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add 1 oz of Blue Curaçao Liqueur, 0.5 oz of Tequila, 0.5 oz of Rum, 0.5 oz of Gin, and 0.5 oz of Vodka.

Where it came from
Late-90s rebrand of the Long Island Iced Tea, born in the same era of nightclub-menu drinks where colour was a selling point. Tequila, gin, vodka, rum, and a heavy pour of blue curacao instead of triple sec. The original is yellow-brown over ice with a Coke top. Swap the Coke for lemonade and a heavy pour of curacao and you get this blue version.
It became a staple of beach-bar menus from Bali to Bondi to Cancun, partly because the colour photographs well and partly because the recipe forgives a sloppy pour. Five spirits, one mixer, no garnish drama. The drink does the talking.
What it tastes like
Sweet citrus up front from the curacao and lemonade, then a five-spirit warmth on the finish. Drinks lighter than it pours, which is the trap.
Each spirit shows up in a different layer. Vodka gives you the front edge, gin sneaks in through the middle, rum and tequila fight it out at the back. The curacao smooths the whole thing into one drink. The lemonade carries it.
The technique
Fill a highball glass with ice. Pour half an ounce each of tequila, white rum, gin, and vodka. Add one ounce of blue curacao. Top with lemonade and stir once gently from the bottom up.
Stir twice and you mix the colour out. Stir once and it stays layered enough for a clean blue glass. A lemon wedge on the rim, no other garnish needed.

Blue Curacao

- Bols Blue Curacao (the bar standard, cleanest pour)
- Try
- Senior Curacao of Curacao (distilled from real laraha orange peel where the original recipe came from)
- Why
- Blue curacao is dyed orange liqueur. The orange flavour is real, the blue is colour. Skip generic blue liqueur at the cheap end of the shelf. The flavour falls off and the colour fades fast in a tall glass. The whole point is the colour.
The Five Spirits
- Use
- Plain blanco tequila, white rum, London dry gin, neutral vodka
- Skip
- Aged or flavoured spirits (gold tequila, dark rum, flavoured vodka)
- Why
- White spirits keep the colour clean and the flavour neutral. The curacao and lemonade do the work. Aged spirits muddy the blue and add competing notes that fight the citrus.

Cola Version
- Long Island Iced Tea
- The original. Same five spirits, swap blue curacao for triple sec and lemonade for cola. Brown, brutal, classic.
Tequila-Forward
- AMF (Adios Motherfucker)
- Same recipe, more tequila, less rum, splash of sour mix. Punches harder, tastes sharper.
Lighter Pour
- Blue Lagoon
- Vodka, blue curacao, lemonade. Drop the other three spirits and you get a light, drinkable, beach-friendly cousin.

Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.
Triple sec plus a few drops of blue food colouring. Closer in flavour to the original Long Island, the colour is the only loss.
Drop it and bump the others up by a quarter. The drink still works with three spirits. With two it becomes a Blue Lagoon.
7-Up, Sprite, or any clear lemon-lime soda. Avoid tonic, the quinine fights the curacao. Avoid soda water, the drink needs the sweetness.
Any tall glass holding 12 to 14oz. Wine glass or pint glass works. The drink is volume-driven, the shape is just for show.
