What it tastes like

Real cooked agave, warm pepper, a touch of citrus and a slightly herbal lift. Not as polished as Don Julio, not as soft as Casamigos, but loud and honest in the right ways.

Drinks bigger than its price suggests. The 40% ABV pushes through ice and citrus without disappearing.

How to drink it

Margaritas at scale. Espolon is the tequila to batch a Margarita pitcher with. Also brilliant in Palomas, Ranch Water, and frozen drinks where you want the agave to keep showing up.

Decent for shooting if you must. Skip it for sipping neat: Espolon Reposado is the sipper from this family.

The bargain that bartenders endorse

Espolon launched in 1998 and was bought by Campari in 2008. It became the worst-kept secret in the bar industry: a tequila that tastes like 50 dollars in a 25 dollar bottle. The rooster on the label is named Ramon.

Campari has kept the price down even as the brand grew. That alone is reason to keep it on the shelf.

Why Espolon punches above its weight

Espolon uses 100% blue agave grown in the highlands and lowlands of Jalisco, cooked in autoclaves and column-distilled. Not artisanal, but consistent and honest. The juice does its job. The bottle does the rest.

Substitutions and swaps

Espolon swaps for almost any blanco when you want to save money without losing character.

Recipe says Patron Silver?

Espolon Blanco gets you 80% of the result for half the money. Honest swap.

Recipe says Don Julio?

Espolon is louder, less polished. Cocktail will run a bit hotter on agave. Many will prefer it.

Recipe says reposado?

Don’t sub blanco. Use Espolon Reposado from the same range.

Out of triple sec for Margaritas?

Espolon plus fresh lime plus agave nectar. Tommy’s-style. Done.

Want it smokier?

Sub a third with mezcal. Del Maguey Vida is the standard pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is Espolon Blanco tequila?

Espolon Blanco is a 100% blue agave blanco tequila made at Destiladora San Nicolas in Jalisco, Mexico. It bottles at 40% ABV and is owned by Campari Group. Founded in 1998.

Is Espolon Blanco good tequila?

For the price, yes, brilliantly. It is one of the best-value blancos on the market: real agave character, honest distillation, no shortcuts that you can taste in a cocktail.

What does Espolon Blanco taste like?

Cooked agave, warm pepper, citrus, slight herbal lift. Less polished than Patron, more aggressive than Casamigos, in the same agave-forward camp as Don Julio at half the price.

Espolon vs Patron, which is better?

Different jobs. Patron is polished and premium. Espolon is loud and affordable. Bartenders use Espolon for batched cocktails and Patron when the customer asks for it.

Why is Espolon so cheap?

Campari runs an efficient distillery and chooses to keep the price low. The tequila is column-distilled rather than slow pot-distilled, which lowers cost without giving up character.

Can you drink Espolon Blanco neat?

You can, though it leans loud and peppery. Espolon Reposado is the easier sipper. Most people use Espolon Blanco for cocktails.

Is Espolon Blanco gluten-free?

Yes. 100% blue agave, no grain content, naturally gluten-free.

What is the best cocktail to make with Espolon Blanco?

A batched Margarita. The agave and pepper push through dilution and citrus without losing their personality. Also brilliant in Palomas and Ranch Water.
