Ingredients
- 45 ml Blanco Tequila (100% agave)
- 15 ml fresh lime juice (about half a lime)
- 1 chilled bottle Topo Chico mineral water (or any sparkling mineral water, 350ml)
- Ice cubes
- 1 lime wedge, to garnish
Instructions
- Take a chilled bottle of Topo Chico from the fridge. Open it.
- Pour out about 60ml of the water (drink it or save it).
- Pour the tequila and fresh lime juice directly into the bottle.
- Drop a couple of ice cubes in if you want it colder. Squeeze a fresh lime wedge in.
- Drink straight from the bottle. Texas-style.
- Alternative: pour into a tall highball glass over ice with the lime wedge, top with the Topo Chico.
Notes
Where it came from
The Ranch Water originated in West Texas in the 1980s, supposedly at the Pena Cattle Co Ranch in Fort Davis. Cowboys started mixing tequila with their Topo Chico – the Mexican mineral water imported into Texas – and the combination became regional folklore.
It went mainstream around 2018-2019. By 2024 it was the most-Googled tequila cocktail after the Margarita itself, and the canned RTD version is one of the fastest-growing categories in American liquor stores.
What it tastes like
Bright lime up front, clean tequila in the middle, fizzy mineral water on the finish. Light, dry, refreshing. The mineral content of the Topo Chico makes it taste cleaner than a Tequila Soda.
Drinks like sparkling water with a kick. Hot day, beach, patio drink. Three of these is mid-afternoon territory.
The technique
Two ways. Texas-style: pour tequila and lime directly into the Topo Chico bottle, drink from the bottle. American restaurant style: build in a highball glass over ice.
Both are valid. The bottle version has more swagger. The glass version is easier to drink without choking.
Ratio matters. 45ml tequila to 350ml bottle is the standard. Less than 30ml is too weak. More than 60ml stops being a Ranch Water and becomes a tequila and soda.

Ingredient Spotlight
The bottles that make or break this drink.
Tequila
- What it is
- 100% blue agave tequila, blanco style.
- Why we use it here
- Defining ingredient. Blanco for clean agave character.
- Drink Lab pick
- Espolòn Blanco, Casamigos Blanco, or Ocho Blanco.
- Substitute
- Reposado works but tilts the drink heavier. Mezcal makes a Smoky Ranch Water.
Topo Chico
- What it is
- Mexican mineral water bottled in Monterrey since 1895. Very high carbonation, distinct mineral profile.
- Why we use it here
- Defining ingredient. The carbonation and minerality is what separates Ranch Water from a generic tequila soda.
- Drink Lab pick
- Topo Chico original. San Pellegrino is closest substitute.
- Substitute
- San Pellegrino, Perrier, or any high-mineral sparkling water. Skip flavoured ones.

What if I don’t have…
Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.
San Pellegrino is closest. Perrier works. Avoid LaCroix or low-mineral sparkling water.
Buy a small bottle of 100% agave even if it costs more. Mixto ruins the drink.
Bottled lime juice in a pinch but the drink suffers. Use fresh.
