Where it came from
Joke-name shots flooded out of US pubs in the 1990s and 2000s. The Cum Shot, the Slippery Nipple, the Buttery Nipple all share the same DNA. Butterscotch and cream-based liqueur, optional whipped cream, deliberately rude name to draw attention to the order.
There is no real history beyond a bartender wanting to make the table laugh. The recipe is too simple to have a creator.
What it tastes like
Sweet caramel butterscotch with a creamy finish. The whipped cream on top adds a milkshake quality and bridges the schnapps and Baileys.
Cold ingredients only. Warm butterscotch schnapps is unbearable. Cold from the freezer it drinks cleanly with almost no burn.

Why the CM Shot works (whipped cream is mandatory, not garnish)
Butterscotch + Irish cream + whipped cream. The whipped cream isn’t decorative – it’s structural.
The technique
Pour the butterscotch schnapps and Irish cream into a shot glass. Top with a tall, firm dollop of whipped cream – aim for 1cm of cream above the rim.
The visual joke depends on the whipped cream. Squeeze-can whipped cream works perfectly – hold the can vertical and squeeze a tall column. Stiffer whipped cream survives the trip from bar to mouth without collapsing.
Brand picks
Butterscotch schnapps: DeKuyper Buttershots is standard. The cheap versions have a chemical butterscotch taste.
Irish cream: Baileys Original. The shot is designed around it. Other Irish creams (Saint Brendan’s, Carolans) are 10-15 percent off the standard flavor profile.
Whipped cream: Squeeze-can is the right format here. Hand-whipped cream collapses too fast in the shot.
Common mistakes
Drinking it directly. The technique is mouth around the glass and tip back – the whipped cream goes first, then the liqueurs hit. Bite the foam first and you get cream-only.
Spraying the cream sideways. Hold the can vertical, glass below it, squeeze straight down. Sideways cream collapses before you can serve.
Garnishing with chocolate syrup. Tempting, but it changes the drink. The CM is meant to be two ingredients plus the cream.
What if I don't have…
Quick substitutions for when the bottle shop is closed.
Caramel liqueur or DeKuyper Hot Damn Caramel.
Any Irish cream or carolans-style cream liqueur.
Skip it. The drink underneath is still a Buttery Nipple.
Add 5 ml of vanilla vodka or 5 ml of Fireball.
Skip the cream topping and call it a Buttery Nipple. Same drink, different name.
