Where it came from

Smurf Punch is a single-cup version of the blue-curacao tropical punch, scaled down for one drinker rather than a punch bowl. The build pairs an exotic-fruit liqueur in the blue-curacao family with sprite-style lemonade over ice. The recipe came out of suburban back-bar culture, where the blue colour is the joke and the build is the punchline.

It sits in the small-blue family with the Blue Hawaiian, the Blue Lagoon and the Sex on the Beach. All three lean on a blue-tinted liqueur plus a citrus mixer for the bright tropical character. Smurf Punch separates itself with the equal-parts ratio, which gives a sweeter punch profile than the Blue Lagoon and a simpler build than the Blue Hawaiian.

Best ordered at a casual bar, a friend’s house or any setting where a fast pour and a bright blue colour are the point. The drink is approachable, sweet-citrus-and-blue, and works as a quick novelty cocktail when the bartender wants to skip the build steps.

What it tastes like

Sweet exotic fruit up front, soft lemon-lime through the middle, sharp orange-citrus from the curacao base on the finish. The equal-parts ratio keeps the drink on the sweet side; the ice dilutes as the drinker sips and stretches the cup across five minutes. Reads as a sweet novelty cocktail, not a stiff cocktail.

Around 7 percent ABV in the cup once mixed and the ice has melted slightly. Half cup of exotic-fruit liqueur at 20 percent ABV plus half cup of zero-ABV lemonade plus three ice cubes gives a low-strength short pour. Each cup holds about four ounces of the mixed drink with the ice in.

The technique

Drop three ice cubes into a small punch cup or rocks glass. Pour the lemonade in to fill the cup half full. Add the exotic-fruit liqueur to top, fill the glass. Stir once with a bar spoon, drink in five minutes before the ice over-dilutes.

The half-and-half ratio is the technique. Going heavier on the liqueur turns the drink into syrup; going heavier on the lemonade kills the colour and the sweetness. Equal parts holds the cartoon-blue colour and the sweet finish; three ice cubes is enough to chill without over-diluting the cup.
