Stolichnaya vodka bottle on a dark bar.

Stolichnaya

Stolichnaya

Russian-style wheat-and-rye vodka with a real edge. Slightly drier and more savoury than Smirnoff or Absolut. The vodka cocktail nerds quietly prefer for Bloody Marys and any drink that wants vodka with backbone.

What it tastes like

Cleaner than Smirnoff but with more character than Absolut. A faint pepper note from the rye, slight grain sweetness from the wheat. Triple-distilled. Drinks better in heavy mixers (Bloody Mary) than premium wheat vodkas because the savoury edge holds up.

Decent neat from the freezer; not in the league of Belvedere or Reyka but a noticeable step up from mass-market vodkas at the price.

Russian no longer

Stolichnaya was created in the Soviet Union in 1938 as the state premium vodka. After the USSR collapsed, the brand was bought by Yuri Shefler in the 1990s. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the brand rebranded as Stoli and moved most production to Latvia (Latvijas Balzams) in solidarity with Ukraine. Russian connection is now branding history, not present.

The Stoli range now includes lots of flavour expressions (Citros, Vanil, Gala Applik, Ohranj, Razberi, etc.) and the Stoli Elit premium expression.

Best cocktails to make with Stolichnaya

Stoli works in everything from Moscow Mules to Bloody Marys. The savoury character holds up where soft vodkas disappear.

Substitutions and swaps

Stoli swaps for any neutral vodka, with a slight savoury upgrade.

Recipe says vodka?

Stoli is a fine default. Slightly more character than Smirnoff or Absolut at a similar price.

Recipe says citron vodka?

Stoli Citros is a quality alternative to Absolut Citron, often a few dollars cheaper.

Recipe says premium vodka?

Stoli is mid-tier. Use Stoli Elit (the premium expression) or Belvedere instead.

Need a Bloody Mary?

Stoli is canonical. The wheat-rye character pairs with tomato better than soft wheat vodkas.

Need a Moscow Mule?

Stoli works perfectly. The slight pepper plays with the ginger.

Skip if

You want the smoothest possible Vodka Martini. Belvedere or Reyka outperform Stoli at this.

You are buying for political reasons and want to avoid all Russian-heritage brands. Stoli is now Latvian-produced and explicitly anti-Russian-government, but the brand history is what it is.

You want the cheapest mixing vodka. Smirnoff is meaningfully cheaper.

Stoli is widely available worldwide. The standard red label is at any bottle shop; the flavoured range is at premium retailers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what people ask about this bottle.

What is Stolichnaya vodka?

Stolichnaya (often shortened to Stoli) is a wheat-and-rye blend vodka, originally Russian, now produced in Latvia by Latvijas Balzams. Bottled at 40% ABV. Owned by Stoli Group (Yuri Shefler).

Is Stoli still Russian?

The brand was created in the Soviet Union (1938) but the company has been owned outside Russia since the 1990s. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Stoli explicitly rebranded as anti-Russian-government and moved production to Latvia. Modern Stoli is functionally Latvian.

Stoli vs Absolut?

Both mid-tier vodkas at similar prices. Stoli is wheat-and-rye blend, slightly drier and more savoury. Absolut is wheat-only, slightly softer. Stoli wins for Bloody Marys; Absolut wins for Cosmopolitans.

What does Stoli taste like?

Cleaner than Smirnoff with more character than Absolut. Faint pepper from the rye, slight grain sweetness from the wheat. Drinks well in heavy mixers (Bloody Mary, Moscow Mule).

What is Stoli Elit?

The premium expression. Filtered four times through a freeze-out process that removes additional impurities. Smoother and more refined than standard Stoli. About double the price; meaningful quality bump.

Is Stoli gluten-free?

Distillation removes gluten from wheat and rye. Stoli is functionally gluten-free though not explicitly marketed as such. Celiac drinkers should pick corn or potato vodkas to be safe.

What’s the best Stoli flavour?

Stoli Citros (lemon) for cocktails. Stoli Hot (chili-pepper) for Bloody Marys. Stoli Vanil for dessert drinks. The flavoured range is large and most are decent.
